Robertson Wine Tours will offer you a completely unique tour service. The ethos is simple: to give you a once in a lifetime trip with wines and food that you will never forget. Our guides have proven themselves with years of experience, wonderful personalities and of course in depth knowledge of their subjects. We will use different tasting techniques, which all contribute to fulfil your wine tourism experience. But tasting, enjoying and discussing the wines and food is of course the main event. To summarise, the main objective of this tour is for you to taste very interesting wines (not just the most expensive or the famous) and gain a great understanding of the places you are going to visit in the time you have.

Why Robertson Wine Tours?

Your Tour and First Draft of Idea.

Your Tour and First Draft of Idea.

So this has becoming quite comical in some ways considering we first made contact way back in February 2017. Anyway apart from sorry for the wait all I can is we just are ridiculously busy and having to prioritise immediate against long term. Thank you for your continued patience and I hope this document will convince you we are serious!

So the first news is that for many reasons I have taken up the mantle of  personally guiding my clients again, reasons are mainly fiscal as a driver and a guide is pushing clients away from a cost point of view.

I remember David that you and Susan would like to try to keep things as economic as possible and here we can be completely transparent on costs which although is not a attractive way to start a conversation it does enable us to know we are on the right path.

Accommodation:
Well you mentioned a budget of between 100 and 175 per per night per person and that gives us great flexibility. Enough for some splurges but think an average of 125 Euros per person per night and we are pretty well covered, April surprisingly is High Season in the South already but we can lock in some good deals, especially if we pre pay and go for non refundable rates (Is that something you are comfortable doing?).

Guiding:
My costs per day are 300 Euros and my lodging and food budget is about 80 In total. You will not need me every day and I will try to make logistical savings wherever we can. I am a wine expert and not a licensed historical or Cultural guide. My company and myself are however licensed to promote Italys’ territories. Where I think expertise is needed we tend in these circumstances to have  city guides and experts here and there step on and off where we need them.

Transport:
The company has a BMW 3 series but it is not comfortable in the back for long journeys as it is a convertible, so unless you or Susan are under 5 ft that will not work, in these instances I work with Hertz and we can rent anything from a medium compact to a Maserati..Think 30 to 300 Euros a day, Our Diesel is expensive but we are not traveling mega distances.

Activities:
Well some wineries charge nothing and I am semi expected to pick up a bottle or two up to some wineries in Tuscany that charge 100 Euros. Friuli tends to be 20 to 30 euros per head and in Puglia and Basilicata similar. As I have presented many of these wineries wines over the years at masterclasses and events we always enjoy great tastings, older vintages etc.

Lunches here again, we can mix it up with some heavier lunches and lighter dinners and vsv. In the South or even Friuli a very fine meal with wine should not go beyond 60 Euros a head, the south is about simplicity and is not expensive really.  Fish and seafood meals could be 20% more. Venice; Well, thats another story but we do have some great restaurants that are not over the top expensive. Cooking classes can run from 60 to 150 euros per person which naturally includes wines and lunch or dinner (we prefer lunch as we can enjoy the visits to the markets aswell).

Venice:
You said you will not need any of services in Venice and I totally understand that. To open up the furnace and make a glass experience is just not feasible for two from a cost point of view (But you can visit them). We do have two outstanding female guides that are based there and one is is very wine centric, so we would be able to make a tasting for you no problem, happy just to put you in touch, just let me know. Venice is very expensive for guiding (80/90 Euros an hour) and you can eat badly, but we can happily steer you in the right direction.

My Radical Idea:
Now it may seem odd but as I have been thinking about this tour and as we are still so far ahead of the game time wise I would actually like to cut a few days from Puglia and Basilicata and I propose taking you to a zone very few get to Friuli.  You were initially drawn to it and being in Venice we are no further than an hour and half away.

If you were able to reduce a night Venice or 3  in Puglia and Basilicata I truly believe we could do something very innovative exciting for you. My relationship with wineries of the zone is exemplary and it is just a wonderful zone for macerated white wines, cold climate reds and if this appeals we could even nip into the Croatian peninsula for the day. Flights and trains between Venice and Bari/Brindisi work really well. I personally adore driving but I think that would a day lost for you really (7 hours travel time).

So I have come up with this plan, of course its not what you asked for exactly but even though I remember from our conversation you like absorb and live and feel local and authentic I think balancing North and South with me and then to the Centre in Lucca by yourselves would be a terrific way to spend your time. One question, its seems counter intuitive to to do your Language course post this trip? Just a thought, but I guess you have your reasons.

If you do not like this idea, not a problem we have a structure to work from , In that case I would suggest if are just in the South we also dip our toes into the Campania wine zone, we can avoid the coast and Amalfi but the interior where the wines are coming from are so untapped and non touristic (great hotels less so).

So the itinerary below is obviously just a draft idea but more importantly its about Pace and having a relaxing as well as immersive time. Personally I think its wonderful.

Hotels:

Victoria Hotel Letterario, Trieste (Friuli)

The hotel’s literary name harks back to the number of great and legendry writers who have graced Trieste. The Victoria Hotel Letterario is perfectly located in the centre of Trieste. You are right in the heart of the commercial zone. The glorious canals and sea front are just 15 minutes away and are what makes Trieste such an interesting town. Well run and totally genuine service, this hotel works really well for our needs. Trieste is better for this hotel and a great place, where to enjoy the amazing local melting pot of peoples.

Paraschos Winery Lodge, San Floriano/Collio (Friuli)

This zone of Friuli has none of the five-star places one would expect. Alexis and his brother invite us to their winery to enjoy a perfect location for our days out in wine. These guys are orange wine experts, in with the elite winemakers of Oslavia, but with their feet firmly on the ground. We love the wine, the rooms and the context. We know you will appreciate the views and the authenticity. We are close to the delightful town of Gorizia and some of the most famous winemakers of Friuli. Expect relaxed ambiance, good sleep quality and plenty of wine.

Hotel: Masseria Montenapoleone, Valle d’Itria

Masseria Montenapoleone is a fortified farmhouse of 1600, carefully renovated in a period of ten years. This is, in our opinion, the most authentic masseria in Puglia. It is a unique property that is not only surrounded by nature, but you have the gorgeous sea of the Adriatic Coast just one mile away or just ten minutes by bike. The level of detail in the rooms is wonderful: nothing is out of place, rustic and very charming. All the rooms have central heating and air conditioning, comfortable sofas and outside terraces to enjoy a wine or a book. Communal areas are gorgeous and there is a swimming pool area that hits all the buttons. Breakfast is exceptionally natural and zerometre sourced, this is a working farm. What is so lovely about the stay at Masseria Montenapoleone is the contact with the nature. As soon as you cross into the property through its impressive gates, you step into an ecological oasis: the colours, the palms, the vineyards are all in tune. This is, in fact, an ecological and sustainable lodge with organic certification. A substantial amount of the produce enjoyed by the guests comes from the farmhouse’s own production. This is the best farmhouse in Puglia: come and find out why.

Hotel: Mantatelure Exclusive B&B, Lecce

Lecce almost always is included on any itinerary for Puglia. The more time we spend in Lecce, the more we uncover. Mantatelurè is Marco’s (the owner) dream, a fashionista who enjoys welcoming people into the wonderful space he has created. With an outstanding terrace with orchard and some beautifully thought out communal areas, we are happy to be able to offer this property. The location is in the old town of Lecce, but totally tucked away. You will feel like a local as soon as the gate shuts behind you and you venture into one of the most important expressions of the Baroque Art in Southern Italy. The rooms are wonderfully equipped and stylish without interfering with utility. Breakfast is a delight. There are no other food services available. This is a small property and we do not envisage any noise or fellow guests to interfere with your stay.

Hotel in Pietra, Matera

How often do you get to stay in a deconsecrated church built into the rock and latterly expanding to become an important local scholastic monastery? Roberto (the owner) has branched off on his own to bring something really quite unique. The mainstay of the property is the massively high central part of the church that has been turned into a wonderful sitting room, reception and place to enjoy the breakfast. Rooms are all very different, some gigantic suites, some smaller rooms that have their own terrace with one of the most commanding views over the Sassi. Breakfast is served buffet style with all the local sweet and savoury delights world travellers come to expect. There are no other food services in the day, but you have a great choice of lunching and dining options at walking distance. This is a place to contemplate and understand why Matera has been voted the European Capital of Culture for 2019.

Calitri (Campania): Casa Rose Farmhouse

It is not often we can say that we are really friends with winemakers. Of course, we know them and buy their wine, but Pierluigi & Nerina Zampaglione are the real thing. The Zampaglione Family has been here for many centuries and being an important agriculturalists. They converted their farm to organics as early as 1990, making them trailblazers in the South of Italy. Their farmhouse (Casa Rose) has beautiful unspoilt views over Alta Irpina. The house has all the facilities that you may need and sets us up beautifully for the following day logistically to get you to Naples for your train to Lucca. The major reason we are here though, above and beyond Pierluigi & Nerina, is the fact that their natural wine (Don Chisciotte) is one of our favourite white wines from Italy. It is a pure fiano made by just two hectares giving approximately 8,000 bottles a year. We will taste at least four vintages of this wine and will dine out in Calitri, most likely with the family.

Tour Guiding & Outline -Venice / Friuli / Puglia and Basilicata for Susan and David Harper

GUIDING

Tim JB Robertson

Due the dates and current availability Tim Robertson plans to be your guide throughout your time in Friuli, Puglia and Basilicata. The advantages are you also have a bilingual wine expert and being the owner of the company doors are opened faster and more graciously. Note: Tim does not guide often but when we think the fit is right and we will a have fun then better we offer that and I think in this case we are there, experts in their field will or can  pop up here and there when we need them.

Tim was born in UK and is of Scottish descent. Tim was introduced to fine wines in 1988 when he worked for Sakagura Wine & Liquor, part of Intercontinental Group in Hong Kong. He was responsible for selling their collection of Bordeaux wines and other top quality new world wines, probably the best collection in Asia at that time. He never quite recovered from tasting the very best at the age of 18. However, he went on to complete his studies in Economics and Business. He was unable to find a suitably well-paid job in wine in London and so embarked on a career in finance. He decided to leave finance in 1998 to refocus on finding a project involving his love: the wine. He inaugurated Robertson Wine Tours in 2003. Client base of Robertson Wine Tours has always been rightly demanding of the best, extremely well-travelled and generally with knowledge of wine. The business has grown organically over the years and despite efforts to get involved in exporting, he has fortunately stuck to the tried and tested formula of offering clients the best the wine countries have to offer.
