Hotel: Abadía Retuerta Le Domaine: Sardon de Duero: Spain

A five-star wine and spa hotel in a former abbey with superb service and cuisine, Often dubbed Spains Top hotel.

The estate covers 500 acres of vineyards and is flanked by some of Spain’s most prestigious wineries. Le Domaine is just outside the village of Sardón de Duero in the Ribera del Duero area in the province of Valladolid in central Spain. It is 112 miles north of Madrid. Lots of towns and villages of historic and gastronomic interest are half an hour or so away. There are 19 rooms and three suite all with views over the vineyards, and a further  eight rooms in a stable block alongside the spa.

This stunning abbey dates back to 1146, when it was built on the banks of the River Duero by the Saint Norbert monks. Today besides producing wines it is a multi-award winning luxury hotel and spa with a Michelin starred restaurant, all this is due to the ownership by Novartis who have deep pockets. Its an expensive stay but there are a lot of things included and the sleep quality is one of the best we have ever experienced, I hope we can show you how good. The Winery visit is not included in the price of the stay and thats annoying so we would skip it.

Hotel-Marques-De-Riscal: Spain

Wine heritage, design style, unique, then the superlatives start. Set amid its own vines, a large metallic building with fantastic food and an impressive spa. Sun lit rooms and suites in contemporary style with balconies and sophisticated furnishings. Wonderful views and plenty of exploring by feet also to the village attached. 43 Rooms and Suites making this a personal experience as much as you can for a Marriott Hotel.

Frank Gehry’s foray into hotel design is a real Rioja destination, striking an epic figure against the legendary vineyards. Hotel Marques de Riscal, a Luxury Collection Hotel, is made for soaking in sumptuous details, from Bang & Olufsen speakers to wine-inspired spa therapies. The Frank Gehry designed, titanium-roofed marvel juxtaposed against the ultra-traditional winery of the same name. The Marqués de Riscal restaurant, under chef Francis Paniego (El Portal de Echaurren).  Breakfast or even dinners is a treat out on the balcony overlooking Elciego in the sun. The Hotel is in expansion at May 2019, There are a lot of visitors and tours happening here and staff are from all over the world, which is a credit to Marriott but it doesn’t feel like you are in Spain in some respects.

Perfectly positioned for all the Rioja Zones: Alta, Avavesa and Baja. We have the important wine towns of Briones, an San Vincent and Laguadia all within 20 minutes. So many restaurants and El Portal de Echaurren in Ezcaray is doable for dinner.

Tour Guiding & Outline – Spain for Al and Barb

GUIDING

Tim

Tim was born in UK and is of Scottish descent. Tim was introduced to fine wines in 1988 when he worked for the Sakagura Wine & Liquor, part of Intercontinental Group in Hong Kong. He was responsible for selling their collection of Bordeaux Wines and other top quality new world wines, probably the best collection in Asia at that time. He never quite recovered from tasting the very best at the age of 18. However, he went on to complete his studies in Economics and Business. He was unable to find a suitably well-paid job in wine in London and so embarked on a career in finance. He decided to leave finance in 1998 to refocus on finding a project involving his love: the wine. He inaugurated Robertson Wine Tours in 2003. The business has grown organically over the years and despite efforts to get involved in exporting he has stuck to the tried and tested formula of offering his clients the best the wine countries have to offer. Client base of Robertson Wine Tours is rightly demanding of the best, extremely well-travelled and generally with knowledge of wine.
