Testimonial – Southern Cone – Wine & Food Experience – 32 Nights

Dear Fellow Traveler and Wine Enthusiast,

This past winter my husband and I wanted to do something special to celebrate his seventieth birthday. We knew it had to involve both travel and wine. While we had focused much of our recent travel experiences on wine, traveling to Tuscany, Piemonte, Provence, Napa, the Oregon Pinots in Willamette Valley and the Washington reds in Walla Walla, we wanted flat out decadence …so we turned to Robertson Wine Tours and asked him to focus on South America.

We had limited knowledge of the wines and even less knowledge of the region. Our Spanish was also limited. We wanted to spend a good month exploring this area. We worked closely with Tim Robertson over the next few months. Tim really got to know us during those months. Initially through a pretty detailed questionnaire, we also spent time on the phone with Tim and it was clear he was getting to know us so he could tailor the perfect vacation for us. We had an opportunity to review a tentative itinerary and opt for types of properties and winries in the three countries we decided to visit….Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. Tim and Christian developed an ambitious schedule for us, including all of our whims and fancies.

The most important thing to understand is that the wine guides that work for Tim are among the most knowledgeable and interesting characters one would ever hope to meet. They really enhanced our experiences in all ways possible. We looked forward every day to spending more time with these very special people. Not only did they know their wines and were well known by each and every winery we visited, they knew the history, culture, political landscape and the best places to dine. Though our trip was focused on wine, I would have to say we learned more about the history and culture of the countries we visited than I thought possible. Truly and unexpected and added bonus! They are no longer our guides, they have become our friends!

On our non-tour days, which we requested, if we were in the mood for a quiet romantic dinner or a casual local experience, they never steered us wrong. Our car travels were comfortable, safe and enjoyable. The conversations were enlightening, full of humour and sprinkled with tall tales on both sides.

Every aspect of this tour, was custom-tailored to our own personal desires. From the initial contact, through the planning stage and throughout the tour itself, the logistics were perfect.

The accommodations were first class. The winery and dining experiences were exceptional. Any changes we asked for during the trip were handled promptly and graciously. The whole experience was exceptional in every way. We can’t stop talking about this trip, even months later! We know we will be calling on Tim and Christian’s expertise in the near future, and we can hardly wait to start planning our next adventure!

Without any reservations whatever, we wholeheartedly recommend the Robertson Wine Tour for your next travel experience! Explore your hearts desire with confidence that you are in the very best of care! As Tim’s fellow Brits would say, “it was a thumping great time”!

Sincerely,

Surinder and Nancy Singh

Chile Wine Valleys – San Antonio Valley – La Casona/Matetic Winery

La Casona in the Matetic Winery was built in the early 1900s and is characteristic of the traditional countryside of Chile of the time. In 2004, it was completely renovated and elegantly decorated by a renowned designer and architect: Max Cumming. It offers seven spacious rooms fitted with either a king size bed or two single beds, central heating, an en-suite bathroom and a private terrace. It has a meeting hall for up to 45 people, a pool table, a fireplace and an honesty bar. You can also relax in the lovely outdoor swimming pool that overlooks the gardens and the vineyards.

Santiago Wine Valleys – Colchagua Valley – Terra Viña

With the Andes Mountains as lovely background, Terra Viña brings on a new concept in Chile: lodging in a very beautiful environment next to an old family-based winery and dining in the elegant surroundings. Surrounded by their own vineyard, Terra Viña is a footstep away from the Laura Hartwig Winery and the Vino Bello Restaurant. The owners are a Danish/Chilean couple that have decided to settle in Chile after having lived in Denmark for many years. They have 19 tastefully decorated rooms. Each room has its own balcony with a splendid view. All the rooms have been equipped and decorated for your comfort: oak floors, traditional country style bathroom tiles and black out curtains. They bought the best beds and imported duvets and pillows from the Scandinavia. You will count on complete peace and tranquillity at night.

Chile Wine Valleys – Maipo Valley – Casa Real/Santa Rita Winery

We certainly love Casa Real in the Santa Rita Winery for the superb service, the well-appointed and cavernous rooms, the lashings of history that comes with a stay here. Casa Real is full of antiques with every room with a story built around the various owners over the two hundred years of Chilean History. Breakfast is as one would expect: fruit, breads, fresh baked good, eggs to order, ham, cheese, bacon, coffee and fresh orange juice. The food is a sumptuous affair. We suggest a walk in the gorgeous grounds, where pre-dinner cocktails are served. Dinner is really an event and one that we are sure you will delight in, not just for the food, but the setting and ambiance. Dinner is always accompanied by some of the great wines of Santa Rita. Outside of the incredible grounds, there is also a pool gym, a recently renovated private chapel and delightful fountains. We think this represents a great stay. It is important to remember that this is not a hotel per se, as such wi-fi is not that strong and you must remember that there may be groups staying there. It is a perfect stop between the north-western zone and the southern (Colchagua Valley).

Mendoza City – Park Hyatt

Park Hyatt, with its beautifully restored 19th-century colonial building, without doubt is one of the most prestigious hotels in Mendoza. Apart from all the facilities you would expect from a five stare lodge, it enjoys the best position imaginable sitting on the western side of the most important square in Mendoza: Plaza de la Independencia. The amenities include a fully equipped SPA and gymnasium, an outdoor pool and a garden sun deck. There are plenty of bars and two restaurants to enjoy, as well as a deck overlooking the square.

Uco Valley – Finca La Azul Guest House

Shirley & Pablo’s house: this could be the alternative name of Finca La Azul. They are who bring this all to life and make it the most intimate stay on this side of the Andes. A beautiful design lead home that they cleverly built to include some extra rooms for their guests: we hope you will be among them. Endless 360 degree vineyards views with the Andes ever present. The rooms are extremely large and light filled, all enjoying their own terraces. The style is typical of Argentine Pampa with exposed walls, wall to ceiling glass giving a rustic yet clean effect. There is also a huge garden to enjoy with a swimming pool and a parrilla, where the BBQ meats work their magic. Paul & Shirley are avid about food/wine and super cooks. This stay will be intimate and relaxing. Highly Recommended. Availability is an issue.

Cachi – La Merced del Alto

Located in the Calchaqués Valley, in the heart of the Salta mountains, the elegant La Merced del Alto offers something really delightful. A stunning building in gorgeous grounds, framed by the Andes foothills with a super wine cellar, brilliant swimming pool, It really does have it all. Rooms at La Merced are tastefully and sparsely decorated with plenty of natural light many around a courtyard that is typical of the area. Some higher level suites have uninterrupted mountain views and a separate lounge area. La Merced del Alto features a great restaurant and a traditional bar area and games room. Cachi is only 2 kms away. The question is do you want to stay in Cachi the town itself or here  out in the nature? Hard choice to be honest.

Cafayate – Patios de Cafayate

Patios de Cafayate is next to the ‘El Esteco winery’, one of the regions famed wineries. A Starwood property for some years now. Think antique furniture, artisan carpets, ceramic floors and think stone walls. This is not a large property with just thirty guest rooms and suites. The communal area through invoke a a feeling of a much larger luxury resort, A wonderful pool area sets of the gardens and dinner alfresco is always a treat. The wines as you can imagine come literally straight from the tanks. In terms of places to stay in Cafayate this is the ideal choice for those who need their comforts.

Buenos Aires – Legado Mítico

A most sophisticated boutique hotel in fashionable district of Palermo: elegant in style and with excellent service. This townhouse has a restrained façade, but from the moment the smiling staff open the door you will feel welcome. An intimate lobby opens into a spacious bar and lounge, beautifully designed to combine classic and modern in equal measure, and all very Argentine. Leather chesterfields and Mies van der Rohe chairs are given a gaucho twist. Chic cushions in indigenous textiles also sit on minimalist sofas. There is no restaurant here, but breakfast is served and there is an astonishing choice of places to eat on your doorstep. This elegant retreat feels like a smart private club and it is without a doubt our choice in Buenos Aires. We have a great relationship with them and they so do care about our clients.

Hotel: Villa La Angostura – Las Balsas

Las Balsas is a small intimate lodge on the northern shore of the Nahuel Huapi Lake (100 km from Bariloche) in the Lake District. This is a property of Relais & Chateaux. Lots of wood, large windows with lake views. This was built as a house and it very much feels like a house.  Stunning lake with pool in and outdoors means you are water bound.  The whole area, much of it protected under the National Park System, is one of outstanding natural beauty, with snow-capped volcanoes, cascading rivers emerging into serene lakes and dense forest. Activities include: World class fishing, kayaking, sailing, water-skiing, cycling, walking and horse riding.  If you have been racing around the vineyards with us or enjoying frenetic Buenos Aires, Las Balsas is a truly wonderful place to retreat to and enjoy the views/tranquillity of this wonderful piece of the World.

Carmelo – Narbona Wine Lodge

Narbona Wine Lodge is where cool set come from Montevideo and Buenos Aires come to relax at the weekends or holidays. Beautifully built (new build) and situated on an important estancia dating back to 1909, its a hit for us and our clients. On site there is a lovely restaurant, a bakery, a general store, a museum, a winery and a vineyard, you never need to leave. At one with nature, tranquil and relaxing; exactly as Uruguay should be.

Montevideo – Sheraton Montevideo

If My Suites is too small and not of your level, then we have the Sheraton. The location is very best for seeing where the embassies and the wealthy live are. It is delightful, understated and you are always close to the sea/river. The views are wow. It is attached to a mall and its 1990’s building gives it the feel of a convention centre hotel. However, staff, management and value for money make this a good choice for Montevideo. Even if our review does not sound raving, it is still convenient for our needs.

GUIDING

Fanor (Chile)

Fanor has spent almost 30 years in his life in close relationship to the wine industry. At the beginning, he worked as export manager for the Concha y Toro Winery and later as independent broker. He has travelled worldwide, having the opportunity to learn many things. He is very easy-going and with an elevated cultural level. He enjoys meeting people to develop long conversations about wine, history, food, geography, popular music and literature. Between 2009 and 2012, he was appointed as managing director of the Colchagua Wine Route, the first and most important wine route in Chile. This position gave him the opportunity to understand the tourism industry. Between 2005 and 2012, Fanor has been a member of the board of directors of the Casablanca Wine Producers Association and the Colchagua Wine Producers Association. Due to this activity, he has developed a very strong link with the wineries located in both valleys. Today, Fanor is on retirement, but he enjoys sharing his knowledge about wine with tourists interested in learning about this industry in Chile, working as a wine tourism guide.

Juan (Mendoza, Argentina)

Juan is from Mendoza and is a real wine lover. He started to connect with wine at the early age of 11 years old, when his father, being a winemaker, introduced him to the experience of wine with sparkling water, the sodeado, as they use to call it. Since those days, he has lived a very happy life in Mendoza, the city of magics. Juan has been working for the wine tourism sector in Mendoza in the last ten years and still falls in love with every single spot of this place blessed by the sun and every single piece of land where grapes/vines are grown. He has the ambition to share and show to citizens of the world his little heaven spot. He loves his work, as it gives to him the chance to live his dream: introduce Mendoza and her wine culture to the world.

Agustin (Salta, Argentina)

Agustin is a native guide very interested in the nature and the cultural traditions of Salta. He also enjoys very much the local wines and is a very good cook. He has often surprised our clients with his superb asados. With Augustin, you will have a privileged and authentic connection with all the jewels Salta has to offer. Enjoy with him the results of the peculiar terroir and climate of Northern Argentina, a territory of high altitude and extreme wines. The nature of Salta is also a very important resource of Agustin: the interpretation of protected sites and local communities is what will make of this journey a unique process of discovery. We are sure that Augustin will do his best to make this section of the tour an unforgettable experience.

Mariana (Buenos Aires, Argentina)

She is fluent in English & Spanish with many years of experience in tourism. Mariana is just the perfect guide as she can read people very well and knows pretty well how to get into the skin of Buenos Aires. You will have with her a very intense and fascinating understanding of Buenos Aires with Mariana. Also do not forget that Mariana is a great tango dancer.

Damian (Uruguay)

Damian is a wine connoisseur who was born and raised in Mendoza. He was always in contact with the wine culture in his daily life thanks to this grandfather, a wine enthusiast who had been a manager of a large tree plantation in Uco Valley, the very heart of the wine industry in Mendoza. In 2004 he spend three months in New York, where he acquired the fluency and proficiency needed to communicate in English as a native speaker. After getting a BA in Mendoza, he left the city in the search of new horizons and arrived in Uruguay. He started to investigate the new territory, visiting different wineries across the country and talking to wine makers as well as studying the wine culture of the country. He finally came to the conclusion that Uruguay, a country who was not yet discovered by wine lovers, was a diamond in the rough and had to be known in the world. You will have the chance with Damian to discover and enjoy Uruguay in a very friendly way by introducing you to the relaxed and informal local style, which allows people to meet the winery owners in person and ask them all the questions they may have about grape growing and wine-making process. A unique experience.
