Wine & Food Experience in Central Italy: Rome & Tuscany ROBERTSON WINE TOURS for Suzanne & Leon Thursday 25th August 2016 - Friday 09th September 2016

FOCUS

The pursuit of a meaningful travel for Robertson Wine Tours means getting involved in the local culture of a specific region or a country as quickly as you can. Robertson Wine Tours will offer you a completely unique tour service. The ethos is simple: to give you a once in a lifetime trip with wines and food that you will never forget. Our guides have proven themselves with years of experience, wonderful personalities and of course in depth knowledge of their subjects. Most of all, we want to enable you to have an amazing and unforgettable tour by sharing with you the insights and things we most love: food, wines and great company in world-class settings. We will use different tasting techniques, which all contribute to fulfil your wine tourism experience. But tasting, enjoying and discussing the wines and food is of course the main event. To summarize, the main objective of this tour is for you to taste very interesting wines (not just the most expensive or the famous) and gain a great understanding of the places you are going to visit in the time you have available.

Testimonial

Hard to forget such a memorable and wonderful time and experiences that began Timingly and continued right through that terrific stay in the room, which secretly looked into the chapel.  Since you asked, I may get carried away. Wonderful properties all. Our hotel in Rome was superb in terms of service, style and location. The hotel in Florence was so elegant and not at all snobby. The night we had to cancel dinner, it ended up raining and we had one of the most wonderful romantic dinners on the patio while we dined under the rain. By the way, the mattresses we slept on in both Rome and Florence were probably the best we have every experienced. We have found European mattresses to be so superior to American.

And by the way, wherever we went, we heard people whisper  - Robertson Wine Tours (of course, with an Italian pronunciation and linguistic flair Robertson sounds almost like a regal passport to adventure as they rolled rrrs and son became SONE) at which point they would look at us with kindness in their eyes and with the most elegant sweeping hand gestures, would start falling all over themselves in graciousness. The lodge in Chianti was terrific, in the wonderful suite overlooking the vineyard and the mirrored art installation (the art was almost as good as their wine). The breakfast was crazy wonderful as Paola made us breakfast cakes and tarts and hand squeezed fresh juice with fruit, yogurt and and and…as if she was cooking for a full house of guests as opposed to just us.

Lunches – pretty much big hits every place – especially when they finally got the message that we wanted smaller courses and less meat. We did much better this time trying to figure out how to eat…but have to say the lunches were terrific. A huge standout was Paris Boheme in Lucca. The guy who runs it is certainly is part of the show that features just wonderfully creative and amazing food. Just thinking about it, Suzanne and I could actually just run to the airport now to buy a ticket to Italy and walk to Luca just to taste that ravioli with strawberry champagne cream one more time. La Cantinetta di Rignana was beautiful location and food as was Boccon. The meal with your young sommelier in Montalcino was great and the wines were superb.

Dinners – La Pergola now joins the list next to Duomo as one of the most superb and sublime food and dining experiences ever. So glad we did that as our dolce at the end of our wonderful journey. Of course, the dinners in Rome with you were super fun, especially the local neighborhood patio and pizzeria. Palagio was good, slightly marred by a distracted staff and room due to a disruptive family. Not sure we would rush back as we would with Pergola and Duomo. Pitti Gola was such a wonderful night. Eduardo was a wonderful host and Shannon stopped by to say hello. Have to say, she is filled with the spirit of her American exuberance.

Cooking class in Florence was fantastic, it was such an end to end terrific experience. The cooking demonstration was also fun at Brolio as was the tour.Guides -  Kathryn, Cristina and the driver in Rome were wonderful. Sandro is sandrorific.  Wines…we had a few of those I think. Standouts: Guido is the man. Loved him. His story. His rickety fiat. His knowledge of food. His bread. His olives and some amazing wine where the winemaker says he does nothing to it, but let it hang out in the dustiest, gnarliest, spider web covered cellar and let it turn itself into wine. It does that well. Really like the wines at Casato Prime Donne and of course the story, the man and the wines at Paradiso di Frassina. We very much liked the wines at San Felice and La Serena, of course Castello di Ama. Meeting Assunto himself at Bellaria was a treat as it was to see Gianni, the grandson take on responsibility of family and tradition. Also, I so wanted to applaud the young scion of Castello Tricerchi, who is part of a very proud tradition with some wines that will get there with time and his reasoned care.

Thanks again for all you  do to make the time and experience so special.

Hotels:

Hotel: Aldrovandi Villa Borghese, Rome

The location of Aldrovandi is utterly perfect to enjoy the mythical gardens of Villa Borghese and to be away from the crowds and heat of Rome. The gorgeous communal areas, lovely pool and gardens are a delight and if you have time to enjoy this hotel we think it makes total sense or it is also a great choice for those who know Rome already.

Hotel: Villa Cora, Florence. Tuscany

Villa Cora is a stunning five star mansion. Located up above the frenetic town of Florence, this is the best stay going. Set in beautiful gardens and sweeping driveways in this prestigious residential parkland between the Viale dei Colli Gardens and Boboli, it is a real delight. Shuttles or 20 minute walk and you are in front of the Pitti Palace. The management (Italian) totally gets it and we can safely say that Villa Cora is the best hotel in Florence. If Four Seasons is massive, this is intimate. It features 46 rooms/suites, a heated swimming pool and a restaurant that is very much on everybody’s lips. A more sophisticated yet understated stay in Florence.

Hotel: Castello di Ama Suites, Gaiole In Chianti

Castello di Ama, one of the most famous wine estates in Tuscany, has just opened up four guest suites in their borgo. To say this is our go to winery in Tuscany for serious wine and food experiences tells you everything you need to know. Lodging here is still a bit of secret. Come quick. Please note that this structure functions as a winery stay and not as a hotel, while many amenities are here this is a quiet and peaceful stay and is not a 5 star luxury hotel with all the associated services one expects.

Hotel: Castello Banfi Il Borgo, Montalcino. Tuscany

Castello Banfi is in a more remote location and better for it, suitable for those who are looking for a very quiet time with great food and wine. While driving up the long tree lined driveway, it already becomes apparent that this is a special place. Banfi took Montalcino by storm and still are wine wise. This is a splurge stay: rooms are local style, terracotta floors, fireplaces and period fabrics. The Borgo is a lovely place to be with 360 degree panoramas over God’s own country. The views are breath-taking and even more so with a glass in hand. The GM, Juan Miquel, is top notch. Management totally gets what you need before you do.

Hotel: Donna Camilla Savelli, Rome

Housed in a beautifully restored 17th-century monastery designed by Borromini (a major figure in Roman Baroque architecture), the Donna Camilla Savelli is located just over a bridge from the heart of old Rome and immersed in the bohemian district of Trastevere. The 76 rooms and suites are sober in decoration very much in harmony with the monastic concept of the historic building. The magnificent view of Rome from the panoramic roof terrace is too much of a treat to miss. Not a luxury stay, but one of the cleverest choices around. You will not feel like a tourist here. We do recommend the premiere suite with terrace, if you can justify it.

Tour Guiding & Outline – Rome & Tuscany – 15 Nights

GUIDING

Anna (Rome)

Born in Cosenza (South Italy), Anna has been for many years an official cultural guide of Rome. After taking part as an auditor to the Educational Department of the National Gallery in London, she was awarded the official title of Vatican Guide for the Vatican City. And it was for the Vatican Museums & Gardens that she created emotional and playful journeys for kids to help them to have a strong and very intense relationship with Art & Nature. Thanks to her knowledge, expertise and sensitiveness, she has recently started the career of script writer with a local director. She loves nature, music, theatre, literature, philosophy, religion and art of gardening. She also paints and loves writing. Do not miss the experience of discovering Rome with her.

Katharine (Florence & Surroundings)

Your driver will be Katharine in Florence, who will also act as your tour escort.
Florence and the entire region of Tuscany are so rich in cultural heritage, stunning art, superb architecture, picturesque landscapes, good food and incredible wine that if you are not careful you will fall in love with the place and spend the rest of your life here. This is exactly what has happened to Katharine. Born in California and graduate of the University of Berkeley (California), Katharine has been living in Italy for the last thirty years now. With a handle on both languages and cultures, she really enjoys exposing clients to those aspects of the land, the language and the lifestyle of the Bel Paese that give them something to chew on in addition to the sumptuous offerings of Italy.

Cristina (Florence & Siena)

Cristina graduated at the Florence University with a Master Degree in Art History on XVI Century Florentine Private Art Collections. She also attended the Florence University Institute of Fine Arts with studies toward a PHD in Art History with focus on history of technical restoration of paintings. She taught Early XX Century European Vanguards at the Syracuse University and Early Renaissance Art at Pepperdine (James Madison) University in Florence. Cristina is also a long time lecturer and docent at the New York University (Villa La Pietra) in Florence, with focus on the Acton Art Collection, the Anglo-Americans in Florence and the history of the formal gardens of Italy. She has been working for many years within the Uffizi Education Department as an art history teacher, lecturer and thematic researcher for schools and adults.

Sandro (Chianti & Montalcino)

Born in the city of Turin, Sandro started his career as a trainer in natural parks, until he decided to make a life-changing experience in local restaurants and wine shops of New York. He organized workshops and events with food and wine producers from Piedmont and he was attracted by the genuine passion that he saw in the local wine makers and their strong ties with their own land and its traditions. Realizing how food and wine are the best way to bring people of different cultures together and aware that the best way of learning about a culture is to live it every day in first person, he decided to relocate in the Langhe Wine Region, ancient heart of Piedmont. He started organizing wine tours/tastings, hands-on cooking and winemaking experiences for food and wine professionals, tour operators, foodies and kitchen dummies. This also led him to rediscover his own native town, where the aristocratic tradition of its old cafes is melting with the colourful kaleidoscope of flavours brought by the recent migrations from all over the world. Sandro is a professional tourist guide, sommelier and ONAV (National Organization of Wine Tasters) member.
