FOCUS

Dear Robertson Wine Tours’ Client:

For our fourth chapter in the wine and food experience of Basilicata & Puglia for the members of Jetsetter, we have made some structural changes and listened very hard to the feedback from our previous clients over the years. We have chosen two new structures, mainly due to their excellence and authenticity. As before we start in Matera and experience the food, with bread making, cheese and gelato tasting, culminating on a short cooking demonstration and then enjoying a banquet served in a historical palazzo with views over the gravina of Matera. There will be time to meet the artisans of Matera as well as an in depth guided visit of the town.

Wines as ever feature heavily and being RWT we will give the passengers not only a whole new way to understand the wines of Italy, but how to enjoy wine per se. We will focus on the regional emblematic varietal of Basilicata: Aglianico. And the mineral and ethereal wines of Etna in Sicily ... the most active and impressive volcano of Europe. In Puglia we will visit two wineries, one with global fame and the other much smaller and lovingly tended. Wine tastings will also include the North and South of Salento with Negromaro, Primitivo and Susumaniello in prominence, but with local varietals for the whites and the famous roses will feature.

We move from Matera after 3 nights into Puglia and we set ourselves up on the coast of the Valle d'Itria, the most interesting and fascinating part of Puglia. It has taken us years to finally find a masseria that is authentic and wonderfully run with all the touches that our clients need. It is just wonderful. The masseria has outstanding cooking experience, from gathering the ingredients to the hands on making of local dishes. This tour will satisfy the most ardent gourmand. It will never take a hectic pace although we enjoy the main sights of interest. This tour is taking in the white cites as well as being able to have the sensation of enjoying the wonderful coastline of Puglia. We will visit Alberobello with the Trulli (world famous) and the incredible restaurant of Il Poeta Contadino (1-Star Michelin) that has won consistently the best wine list in Southern Italy. Locorotondo competes as one of the most picturesque towns of Italy. And then the very beautiful coastal towns of Monopoli & Polignano a Mare, the regal town of Martina Franca … all with their own people, foods and personalities. Our final visit will be at the almost undiscovered town of Ceglie Messapica with the wonderful restaurant of Al Fornello Da Ricci (1-Star Michelin) where we will enjoy a superb lunch. The final days are less involved with time for our clients to enjoy the wonderful masseria and take a final deep breath of the Southern Italian Air.

All in all this tour is about meeting the local people, mixing, eating and tasting some wonderful wines always with first class guiding.

Testimonials: Puglia & Basilicata – 8 Nights (Group)

We are very Proud of our Testimonials and none more so that for this Southern Italian Tour that we have run over the years

My trip with Robertson wine tours was one of the best holidays I’ve ever had. Booking onto a group tour, one of the risks is the company you’ll be keeping for the week. I needn’t have worried as my fellow travellers were of a like mind; all united by a love of wine, food and travel. The trip was a perfect balance of activity and free time. We managed to pack in a thorough tour of the region, getting to see the real highlights. The benefit of travelling with Robertson WT is that they live in the region and so have inside knowledge not otherwise available to the tourist. They are very caring and will make sure that you are happy with the details, sorting any problems promptly and efficiently. As a solo traveller, I felt in very good hands. The first part of the trip took us to the stunning Matera in the Basilicata – a special place. Made more so by the fact that we gained access to great venues including a wonderful lunch at the house of a local. The wine tasting throughout the trip was informal, fabulous and fun. Tim himself is a real personality and a delight to be with. The second part of the trip took us toward the coast into the countryside where we stayed on an organic farm – a truly magical and relaxing base from which to explore the many beautiful towns and villages of Puglia. What was particularly good was that we got to sample both fine dining (including Michelin star) and rustic home and farm to fork cooking all while gaining insights into local food and wine production. After a week, we had all bonded so well over good food and wine that we have already booked a reunion trip and are discussing a second. All in all a holiday where I discovered amazing food, wine, made new friends for life and got to see a side of Italy otherwise unknown to me. All of this thoughtfully choreographed and curated by Tim and his excellent team. Amanda Menahem London UK.

My third, but not my last RWT trip, to Puglia and Basilicata defied perfection. RWT uses, knowledgeable and insightful local guides, teases out the most delightful wineries, delectable food and local experiences. If you want to travel beyond the ordinary, choose RWT.

I have been working with Tim Robertson of Robertson Wine Tours for over 5 years now, I travelled to Argentina and then Uruguay and have recently returned from a Jetsetter tour they ran in Puglia and Basilicata in November. I have recommended many of my friends to them as they really do what they say, They care about everything each step of the way and they design everything from scratch, their guides, transport and restaurants and hotels all appear to admire and enjoy working with this company, I think it is their professionalism that people respond to. It is apparent they have deep contacts with the wineries in all the regions they work in. Joining a group of people I had not met before was a little outside of my comfort zone but the beauty of course is the considerable discount that going on a jetsetter tour offers. Tim was sure I would gel with the group so off I went.
In 5 years the knowledge they have acquired about Italian wine industry is impressive, and that was one of the attractions of this tour that we were tasting wines from Sicily, Piedmont, Friuli and Campania as well as incredible examples of Aglianico and Negroamaro and Primitivo. Tim always brings out some rare varietal or an unheard method of winemaking for people to discuss. The group was wonderful, I made new friends and saw this southern part of Italy that I really knew very little about. The thousand year old olive trees the incredible oil, the food and the cooking classes were my favorite parts. Next trip is already in the making with a culinary and wine adventure in Sicily, Its great to have something so exciting to look forward to.

Hotel in Pietra, Matera

How often do you get to stay in a deconsecrated church built into the rock and latterly expanding to become an important local scholastic monastery? Roberto (the owner) has branched off on his own to bring something really quite unique. The mainstay of the property is the massively high central part of the church that has been turned into a wonderful sitting room, reception and place to enjoy the breakfast. Rooms are all very different, some gigantic suites, some smaller rooms that have their own terrace with one of the most commanding views over the Sassi. Breakfast is served buffet style with all the local sweet and savoury delights world travellers come to expect. There are no other food services in the day, but you have a great choice of lunching and dining options at walking distance. This is a place to contemplate and understand why Matera has been voted the European Capital of Culture for 2019.

Hotel: Masseria Montenapoleone, Valle d’Itria

Masseria Montenapoleone is a fortified farmhouse of 1600, carefully renovated in a period of ten years. This is, in our opinion, the most authentic masseria in Puglia. It is a unique property that is not only surrounded by nature, but you have the gorgeous sea of the Adriatic Coast just one mile away or just ten minutes by bike. The level of detail in the rooms is wonderful: nothing is out of place, rustic and very charming. All the rooms have central heating and air conditioning, comfortable sofas and outside terraces to enjoy a wine or a book. Communal areas are gorgeous and there is a swimming pool area that hits all the buttons. Breakfast is exceptionally natural and zerometre sourced, this is a working farm. What is so lovely about the stay at Masseria Montenapoleone is the contact with the nature. As soon as you cross into the property through its impressive gates, you step into an ecological oasis: the colours, the palms, the vineyards are all in tune. This is, in fact, an ecological and sustainable lodge with organic certification. A substantial amount of the produce enjoyed by the guests comes from the farmhouse’s own production. This is the best farmhouse in Puglia: come and find out why.

GUIDING

Tim Robertson (Matera)

Tim was born in the UK and is of Scottish descent. Tim was introduced to fine wines in 1988 when he worked for the Sakagura Wine & Liquor, part of the Intercontinental Group in Hong Kong. He was responsible for selling their collection of wines from Bordeaux and other top quality new world wines, probably the best collection in Asia at that time. He never recovered from tasting the very best at the early age of 18. However, he went on to complete his studies in Economics & Business. He was unable to find a suitably well-paid job in wine in London and so embarked on a career in finance. He decided to leave finance in 1998 to refocus on finding a project involving his love: the wine. He inaugurated Robertson Wine Tours (RWT) in 2003. The business has grown organically over the years and despite some efforts to get involved in exporting, he has stuck to the tried and tested formula of offering clients the best that the wine countries have to offer.

Anne (Matera)

Anne is native of France. After 7 years of experience in an American company in Paris, she decided to move to Matera in 1999, the native city of her husband. Fascinated from the very first time by the extraordinary district of the Sassi, she wanted to know more and more about this city part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1993. Showing and explaining such a unique place to the visitors becomes then a very special part of her life.

Francesca (Puglia)

Francesca was born in Puglia, but she has always travelled a lot throughout Europe & USA since she was a child. At the age of 18, she started working in tourism as a tour operator representative in several countries (Italy, Spain, France & Greece), while studying English & Spanish at the Bari University. She was convinced that she wanted to move abroad for work, but after attending a course as tour guide she became aware of the beauty and potentialities of her native land (Puglia) and decided to work as tour guide to promote a cultural image of her region. Together with other colleagues, she co-founded a group of tour guides: their main goal is to escort travellers throughout Puglia letting them experience an exclusive vacation feeling like locals.
