Wine & Food Experience in Southern Italy: Basilicata & Puglia ROBERTSON WINE TOURS for Kara Maiko & Friends Saturday,12th November 2017 - Monday, 21st November 2017

FOCUS

The pursuit of a meaningful travel for Robertson Wine Tours means getting involved in the local culture of a specific region or a country as quickly as you can. Robertson Wine Tours will offer you a completely unique tour service. The ethos is simple: to give you a once in a lifetime trip with wines and food that you will never forget. Our guides have proven themselves with years of experience, wonderful personalities and of course in depth knowledge of their subjects. Most of all, we want to enable you to have an amazing and unforgettable tour by sharing with you the insights and things we most love: food, wines and great company in world-class settings. We will use different tasting techniques, which all contribute to fulfil your wine tourism experience. But tasting, enjoying and discussing the wines and food is of course the main event. To summarize, the main objective of this tour is for you to taste very interesting wines (not just the most expensive or the famous) and gain a great understanding of the places you are going to visit in the time you have available.

Testimonial

“We had an incredible trip planned by Robertson Wine Tours. Tim and Cristian created a tour that fit us perfectly – which is no easy feat! The attention to detail and personalization was what stood out for us. Tim kept in contact from the moment our feet touched the Italian soil, to the day we landed back in San Francisco. Along the way he was willing and able to make changes and accommodate our needs. The local guides we worked with were special. They really knew the area, and we felt like we were able to experience the Puglia region like a local. Every guide was exceptionally helpful and gracious – they truly wanted us to have the best experience possible. The wineries we visited were great, and we had intimate and unique experiences at each location. The food and lodging were high quality, as with the transportation. The trip ended with meeting Tim in Matera, which really made our trip. It was fabulous meeting the guy behind our adventure. We had a great experience, and I would recommend them to anyone.”

Hotels:

Sant’Angelo Luxury Resort, Matera

Sant’Angelo Luxury Resort is blessed with an enchanting view over the very heart of the Sassi of Matera. The hotel is the result of a massive restoration process that involved cave-dwellings, buildings, stairs and courtyards, creating a new concept of lodging. Rooms are scatted all over with one restaurant and reception providing the two hubs of Sant’Angelo Resort. This is a great example of the Albergo Diffuso concept at its absolute finest. Stefano Tardito, the Italian interior designer, has giving elegance, charm and high design, but with functionality. At breakfast or in one of the suites with terrace, you can enjoy a panoramic view overlooking the square of San Pietro Caveoso. Renewed with touches of luxury within ancient rustic spaces. Dinner here is the best in Matera. Our choice in Matera.

Hotel: Masseria Montenapoleone, Valle d’Itria

Masseria Montenapoleone is a fortified farmhouse of 1600, carefully renovated in a period of ten years. This is, in our opinion, the most authentic masseria in Puglia. It is a unique property that is not only surrounded by nature, but you have the gorgeous sea of the Adriatic Coast just one mile away or just ten minutes by bike. The level of detail in the rooms is wonderful: nothing is out of place, rustic and very charming. All the rooms have central heating and air conditioning, comfortable sofas and outside terraces to enjoy a wine or a book. Communal areas are gorgeous and there is a swimming pool area that hits all the buttons. Breakfast is exceptionally natural and zerometre sourced, this is a working farm. What is so lovely about the stay at Masseria Montenapoleone is the contact with the nature. As soon as you cross into the property through its impressive gates, you step into an ecological oasis: the colours, the palms, the vineyards are all in tune. This is, in fact, an ecological and sustainable lodge with organic certification. A substantial amount of the produce enjoyed by the guests comes from the farmhouse’s own production. This is the best farmhouse in Puglia: come and find out why.

Hotel: Mantatelure Exclusive B&B, Lecce

Lecce almost always is included on any itinerary for Puglia. The more time we spend in Lecce, the more we uncover. Mantatelurè is Marco’s (the owner) dream, a fashionista who enjoys welcoming people into the wonderful space he has created. With an outstanding terrace with orchard and some beautifully thought out communal areas, we are happy to be able to offer this property. The location is in the old town of Lecce, but totally tucked away. You will feel like a local as soon as the gate shuts behind you and you venture into one of the most important expressions of the Baroque Art in Southern Italy. The rooms are wonderfully equipped and stylish without interfering with utility. Breakfast is a delight. There are no other food services available. This is a small property and we do not envisage any noise or fellow guests to interfere with your stay.

Tour Guiding & Outline – Basilicata & Puglia – 9 Nights

GUIDING

Tim Robertson (Basilicata)

Your tour leader will be Tim Robertson. Tim was born in UK and is of Scottish descent. Tim was introduced to fine wines in 1988, when he worked for the Sakagura Wine & Liquor (part of the Intercontinental Group in Hong Kong). He was responsible for selling their collection of Bordeaux Wines and other top quality wines from the new world, probably the best collection in Asia at that time. He never quite recovered from tasting the very best at the age of 18. However, he went on to complete his studies in Economics & Business. He was unable to find a suitably well-paid job in wine in London and so embarked on a career in finance. He decided to leave finance in 1998 to refocus on finding a new project involving his true love: the wine. He inaugurated Robertson Wine Tours in 2003. The business has grown organically over the years and despite efforts to get involved in exporting, he has stuck to the tried and tested formula of offering clients the best that some wine countries have to offer. The client base of Robertson Wine Tours is rightly demanding of the best, extremely well-travelled and generally with strong knowledge of wine.

Anne  (Matera)

Anne is native of France. After seven years of experience in a multinational company in Paris, she decided to move to Matera in 1999, the native city of her husband. Fascinated from the very first time by the beauty of the extraordinary district of the Sassi, she wanted to share this privilege to visitors by showing and explaining the secrets of such a unique. This became soon a very special part of her life.

Dionisio  (Puglia)

Dionisio was born in Bari and has studied foreign languages at the local university. While working abroad in Canada & Japan, he realized that he was in love with Southern Italy and decided to come back. Tourism was the perfect field where he could communicate to others his passion for his land. He attended courses to become a “cicerone”. With cruise ships at first and then with tour operators, he began his adventure as a local tour guide and tour leader in Europe. Food & traditions are deep-rooted in the society in Southern Italy and out of curiosity Dionisio started taking cooking classes with professional chefs and wine courses with the AIS (Associazione Italiana Sommeliers / WSA Associate), which brought him to discover the world of Food & Wine. After working as freelance tour director, he is now part of a group of talented tour leaders and guides that Robertson Wine Tours is lucky to be able to use for all our tours in Southern Italy.

Simona  (Lecce)

Simona has been working in the tourism industry for more than twenty years as a professional tourist guide. She loves her job and is very passionate about her city. Having grown up in Lecce, she has developed a very genuine and strong understanding of the place. As Lecce is rich in art and history, she often enjoys bringing the past to life with a focus on the decorative arts and the fascinating language of symbols in art. She knows all the secrets of Lecce and you will discover them with her.
