FOCUS

Dear Robertson Wine Tours’ Client:

We have architected the most wonderful wine and food adventure in Italy we can possible imagine. Having spent considerable time with you Leon thus far, I am getting an understanding of your attention to details and that you need everything just so and this has been taken into consideration in the design of the tour. You have stated that you are both nimble travellers and as such we have set a good pace. We would like to show you as much as possible but not overdo it. In Piedmont, we have really gone to town on the wineries. You will have a 360 degree view of the wines of Piedmont, but the last visit on some of the days you just might not feel like making it and that is ok: we have left in that flexibility.

As before, we will let you recover at Palazzo Margherita and bring everything to you in many respects. We will have some superb tastings in the gardens and just a few light afternoons out initially to let you enjoy the resort and recover from the journey. We will then move to Matera, our home base and you are going to enjoy the pace and this strange and otherworldly town. We'll have a great walking time, a superb lunch in a private palace and of course Tim Robertson always at hand. Tim will be your expert wine guide throughout your time in Basilicata. We will have a light day tasting and eating at the wineries close-ish to the Ionian Sea & Palazzo Margherita, a superb day in wine in the Vulture, where we will tackle the Aglianico, and finally there will be the chance to visit Polvanera, Puglia's star winery on the way to the very unique town of Alberobello with its peculiar trulli and an incredible lunch at one of Southern Italy's most revered restaurant with an outstanding wine list, Il Poeta Contadino.

We are going to give you a number of tastings throughout our time together so you can build up a very good idea of what is going on in Puglia, Sicily, Basilicata and also the most important white wines of Campania. I have decided to take Tuscany out of the offering, but we can always enjoy a Sangiovese if you feel the need. Let's stick to the wines of Southern Italy and of course Piedmont.

In Piedmont, you are going to understand Nebbiolo in all its forms from the Ghemme & Gattinara region, to Roero, Barbaresco and of course all the different sub regions of Barolo. You will go home veritable experts.

As far as moving up into the lakes, we are thrilled you now have time to enjoy two nights at Villa Crespi. As per your instructions, we are going to take you to see the Maggiore Lake so you have a superb overview and, of course, two nights dining at Villa Crespi is something anyone is going to enjoy: it is world-class. After this welcome change of air and environment, on Day 07 with your expert wine guide (Sandro) you are going to head into Langhe. We want to break your journey so we have two quick tastings and lunch in a zone very few wine lovers get to mores the pity, as this is mountain and colder climate Nebbiolo and it is going to be great to contrast this with the wines you are going to try as we go on. The wine touring days lunches are gourmet as you would expect, but they are not going to be big heavy long lunches as we know the dining is what is all about and we do not want you fading away in the afternoon. As we are setting quite an intense time with Sandro, we prefer for you to have your "down day" in the middle of the Piedmont section, the day you will move over from Palas Cerequio to the Castello di Guarene. Not only is this a Sunday, which is naturally much more complicated to get the interesting winemakers out, but we think it makes more sense. I hope you will agree? We have come up with a great selection of restaurants for dining at night, but of course it is up to you.

Sandro and I have worked hard together to give you the best overview without rushing around or driving too far and it all makes logistical sense. There are the massive names, the smaller more intimate people, young pioneers like Roagna and places where the wine, the people, the location and view all come together to make exceptional experiences. We will finally drop you into Turin "sated" and will leave you in pace to enjoy this beautiful regal city. Of course, we would like to make some dinner and lunch proposals to you.

Testimonial – Basilicata, Puglia & Piedmont – Wine & Food Experience – 14 Nights

Reflecting on this makes us realize how much we love what we do. ‘If I had to describe the experience on our recent Southern and Northern Italian holiday with Robertson Wine Tours in one simple thought it would be – “Every moment was a once in a lifetime experience.” And as I read my one sentence, instead of wanting to roll my eyes at the hyperbole, I find myself looking up, recalling and then remembering even more moments that will be with me always. With online travel resources, anyone can book a stay at incredibly scenic and amazing properties. Do enough research and you can find terrific restaurants and make your own reservations. Study for the travel test and you might even find places on earth that even the most seasoned traveller might find novel and wondrous. Wine lovers with enough correspondence might even be able to visit a few interesting wineries. Travel widely and you will surely come across some interesting people who can help you soak up some local culture. But contacting Tim Robertson and Cristian Brisacani of Robertson Wine Tours is not just the beginning of a very special passage to adventure, but in the immoral words of Humphrey Bogart at the end of Casablanca – it is ‘the start of a beautiful friendship.’ For us, it all started with a test. I know you hate tests. Go ahead, take the test online.

Tell Tim what you are looking for in his questionnaire, don’t hold back. He asks about your expectations and level of wine interest and knowledge as well as how you prefer to travel. And then the dialogue and fine-tuning begins. Robertson Wine Tours is less a Wine Tour operator than a matchmaker intent on creating your dream date – moment to moment, day after day. We had more than a little bit of back and forth – as I did, in fact , do a lot of research and “studied for the test.” Over the course of our correspondence and few phone calls, it was apparent that instead of thinking me a pain in the butt, Tim wanted, needed and really appreciated my interest in the details because Robertson Wine Tours is all about getting them right. Planning the perfect series of days with wines, culture, breaks, sights and FOOD is their number one goal. Its not just you will eat well, it’s – well, you will eat like you have never eaten before. Many of our best food adventures were included within the price of the tour and perhaps some the best restaurants we ate in were part of his recommendations (we ate in a virtual galaxy of Michelin star restaurants including 2 that were among the top 50 in the world).

Did I mention that this was a wine tour? We wanted to experience the wines of Southern Italy as well as Piedmont and had 15 days to spend. We have visited wineries all over the world. We live in California and are used to tasting in tasting rooms that are mostly about selling wine. We have tasted in Bordeaux at the great grand Chateaus and were duly impressed with the over the top grandeur and even got to meet some folks who were almost involved in making wine. But tasting in Italy (in the South with Tim himself) and in the Piedmont region with one of the most knowledgeable and charming wine guides, Sandro… was all about understanding wine at the most personable levels. While we tasted amazing wines, what we really tasted was about history and family – legacy tied to the land and to its future. There was deep insight into what made winemakers want to make wines. We were invited into caves, homes, farms, cantinas (Italian cellars), but most importantly invited into the lives of amazing people who helped us understand their wines and the Italian concept of “familia” in a way that was personal, special and real. We encountered many wine makers who were very concerned that when we wanted to buy some of their wines were worried that we felt pressure because they literally spent hours with us and opened up their private reserves for us to taste – just because they enjoyed the conversation. This happened time and time again. While we could have tasted all of these wines at the various tasting rooms and wine bars throughout this region, due to the deep respect in which these winemakers hold Tim and Sandro, we were invited into conversations filled with Italian to English gestures, revelations and meals that lasted hours and those memories that will never fade. We came away from each of these encounters understanding how the current generation of Italian winemakers are taking what their great grandfathers, grandfathers and fathers did into the modern era. We came away feeling the land, the love and humanity that made our days of tasting more about connections.

We take our vacations to relax and to experience. We have never experienced more – relaxing – well, it was jam packed with attention to detail and we would not have had it any other way. The whole time we were there – in every hotel and every restaurant, we could feel the guiding hands of Tim, Cristian and Sandro to the point when there were a few little this’s and that’s along the way, something in the background from the ‘Robertson home office’ set everything not only right, but made us feel like royalty. Robertson Wine Tours were our “handlers” and we felt like rock stars on tour. Now let me say, all of this does not come “cheap,” but then again there is something called “worth” and compared to other tours we have taken including cruises and in the style in which we like to travel – there is an amazing value for the services provided. Whether you have done it all before – or are looking to experience food and wine travel for the first time – or you just want a travel experience like no other, there is a test to take…and then there are some friends waiting for you in Italy – to help create many once in a lifetime experiences. Tim, Cristian and Sandro will make it so.’

Palazzo Margherita, Bernalda

PALAZZO MARGHERITA

Fairy tale property lovingly resorted and run by Francis Ford Coppola whose family came from Bernalda. Expensive and attracts high-level Americans looking for a quaint and quiet stay. Delightful to recover from a jetlag or idea for honeymooners.

Hotel: Villa Crespi, Lago d’Orta

This is the real thing: a classic and unique villa with a wonderful service and fabulous restaurant all adjacent to the most beautiful unspoilt lake of Northern Italy: Lago di Orta. It is the perfect base to visit some of the countryside around this lake and just a short walk takes you to the path that allows you to walk on the water’s edge and taking a dip. The rooms are filled with period antiques, comfortable beds and have lovely views over the lake and surroundings. The breakfast is a highlight with a huge range of choices catering for all tastes. If weather allows, we recommends having breakfast outside on the terrace. For dinner? Just try what the chef recommends, including the wines. This is a glorious gourmet experience.

Hotel: Palas Cerequio, La Morra

PALAS CEREQUIO

Blending tradition and modern technology, Michele Chiarlo and family have restored an ancient small village in the heart of Barolo, creating a Palas with different suites equipped with every comfort. The setting is just stunning with the town of La Morra on top of you and the views over the most important crus’s of Barolo this is heady stuff. Accessibility is a slight issue and going out for dinner at night means transport is needed to travel at night, unless you eat in, all day there is a good simple menu. We really do love the rooms, all with their own character, there is hardly a room without a magnificent view and we feel the suites are fully worth the money. There are two sections to the hotel, New and Old, and the old is really ancient and restored in great keeping with the structure and history. The new style room has technology everywhere and some interesting spa and relaxation techniques you can enjoy all by yourselves in the room which is a lovely touch.

Hotel: Castello di Guarene, Guarene

Castello di Guarene is a most imposing castle, located in the small village with the same name (Guarene), which overlooks the Valley of the Tanaro River. It is the newest and very welcome addition to the Langhe’s top accommodations, which, due to popularity of the zone, is certainly needed. We like its location very much as it is strategically placed for all our wine touring needs. It has been completely refurbished and this has taken many years to complete. The structure had its soft opening in September 2014. The style inside is like the castle itself, old world with Baroque & New Liberty. The SPA is outstanding with incredible views. This is a real splurge, but one we think merits the cost. The views from the manicured gardens are magnificent and are an attraction in their own right. Food & Beverage is at the top of gastronomic offerings, with the restaurant itself well on its way to Michelin Stars and a destination itself.

Hotel: Grand Hotel Sitea, Turin

Grand Hotel Sitea is located right in the middle of cobbled pavements with no car access in front of the hotel, which makes it perfect for walking straight out into the heart of Turin. It is literally in the centre of it all. It is the perfect base for visiting the historical centre and the shopping area. It is also within a short distance of Porta Nuova Train Station from where you can take a shuttle bus to the airport or a train. The atmosphere is quiet and serene after the breakfast and check out, but generally there is a great little buzz. The rooms are well-protected noise wise, the staff polite and efficient. The service in the hotel is excellent: concierge and front desk mainly. Although small, it is obvious that all staff has been carefully trained: everyone in every capacity we have come across is gracious and efficient. The other aspect of this hotel that we like is the fact that there are both contemporary and classic style floors meaning we can provide for most of our clients. Breakfast is very well done and we think it is the perfectly formed hotel.

GUIDING

Tim Robertson (Basilicata)

Tim was born in the UK and is of Scottish descent. Tim was introduced to fine wines in 1988 when he worked for the Sakagura Wine & Liquor, part of the Intercontinental Group in Hong Kong. He was responsible for selling their collection of wines from Bordeaux and other top quality new world wines, probably the best collection in Asia at that time. He never recovered from tasting the very best at the early age of 18. However, he went on to complete his studies in Economics & Business. He was unable to find a suitably well-paid job in wine in London and so embarked on a career in finance. He decided to leave finance in 1998 to refocus on finding a project involving his love: the wine. He inaugurated Robertson Wine Tours (RWT) in 2003. The business has grown organically over the years and despite some efforts to get involved in exporting, he has stuck to the tried and tested formula of offering clients the best that the wine countries have to offer.

Sandro (Piedmont)

Born in the city of Turin, Sandro started his career as a trainer in natural parks, until he decided to make a life-changing experience in local restaurants and wine shops of New York. He organized workshops and events with food and wine producers from Piedmont and he was attracted by the genuine passion that he saw in the local wine makers and their strong ties with their own land and its traditions. Realizing how food and wine are the best way to bring people of different cultures together and aware that the best way of learning about a culture is to live it every day in first person, he decided to relocate in Langhe Region … the ancient heart of Piedmont. He started organizing wine tours, wine tastings, hands-on cooking and winemaking experiences for food and wine professionals, tour operators, foodies and … kitchen dummies. This also led him to rediscover his own native town, where the aristocratic tradition of its old cafes is melting with the colourful kaleidoscope of flavours brought by the recent migrations from all over the world. Sandro is a professional tourist guide, sommelier and ONAV (National Organization of Wine Tasters) member.
