Friuli – Wineries

The Friuli-Venezia Giulia region tucked up in the north eastern corner of Italy,  some might almost say forgotten we say  beautifully undiscovered. Sharing its borders with Slovenia and Austria and Croatia this is a region with a massive mix of culture, foods and of course wines, We just have so many good things to say about this region, its people, wines, We love it here.

When we look at the size of the production of these wines you will be shocked. 15,000 Bottles, 80,000 bottles , you are going to be hard pushed to find a wine maker worth this salt with more than 100,000 bottles annual production. And this is the USP (unique selling point) of this region we are going to meet the owners, the winemakers as they are the same person, there is no PR or language student that will accompany us to understand what is going on, we will meet the people who from grape to bottle know everything about the process. One of the Idiosyncrasies of the areas closer into the border of Slovenia, there can often be cloud break with clouds being lower than vineyards, this has multiple favoring factors in the ripening of the skins, there are many factors at work here. Friuli is one of Italy’s most unvisited wine regions making it an exceptional wine region for vineyard visits.

Friuli, or Friuli-Venezia Giulia  has some of the most interesting native varieties in Italy, unique, not able to be grown in other regions like they are here. Whites  for once take the fame but this in no way means its a one trick pony, Colder climate reds, merlot and Cabernet Franc Schioppettino, Refosco and  Pignolo can be shown to exceptional in their ageing potential and personality, think Bressan and Denis Montanar who are both in fact in the plans not on the hills. Wineries tend towards the smaller family run concerns and are of course better for it. While there are blends made here this is a region that tend to make single variety wines and they have many interesting grapes and styles. The two major DOC areas areas are Collio Goriziano which we tend to just call  Collio  and Colli Orientali (Eastern). If two words can be used about the white wines from this region it will be a freshness signs of  higher acidity and  minerality.

Among the close to 20 varieties we find Ribolla Gialla that is one of the favorites of winemakers along with Friulano, still know locally to the traditionalists Tocai (Hungary won its use of the name, but Here in Italy they are not conformist. Pinot Grigio which despite its malled brand makes exceptional macerated examples in the hills and the resultant wine is pink in colour, on the western planes of Friuli less so. We have Pinot Bianco and some Sauvignon Blanc and  Chardonnay  Traminer, Malvasia and Italian Riesling. Verduzzo can be be sweet or dry and  finally there is the rare and tricky to make Picolit that can give the best of the worlds sweet wines something to think about.

This is a list of the most of the wineries we work with in Friuli. If the winery is on this list it means we believe in one or some of their wines and of course the people, the visit and personalities. And expect big personalities here. The wines are respected throughout the world as some of the most mineral and interesting of cold climate whites. Orange or Macerated wines from the Oslavia region of Fruili are truly unique and unfortunately once your hooked on them there is very few places in the world that can match them, so be careful, and of course they are not what you could call everyday sipping wine. These wineries are more often tiny family concerns making hand crafted wines no more than 30/50k bottles a year. When we take you into the vineyards and wineries you are going to meet the people who count, the owner and normally the enologist.

“Principally orange wine expert. Outstanding wines but – as for Gravner – you have to be more at home with that wine style.”
