Wine & Culinary Experience in Italy (Friuli), Slovenia & Croatia

ROBERTSON WINE TOURS for Margo & Bruce

Monday, 02nd October 2017 - Tuesday, 10th October 2017

FOCUS

Dear Margo & Bruce,

We are thrilled to be able to offer the definitive version of the tour we are going to enjoy in October.

As we explained, it was a lengthy process to confirm all the visits and activities mainly due to the Italian Holiday Season. The pace of this tour is not too harsh for any of us and there is time for leisurely lunches, dinners and sightseeing.

Regarding Croatia, in Istria it is all set and we have stuck to our original version with plenty of input from our friends in Friuli, so it is going to be an exciting entree in a new region for us and thank you for allowing us to explore it together for the first time. All the regions we are visiting are undiscovered by international tourism and this is brilliant news. There are no tour buses outside wineries, as they do not want that and they are very individualistic people. History and location means that they have had empire after empire rolling across them: this little piece of Italy is like no other. The pioneering and spirited people are Friulan first and Italian second.

So, what do we have in store for you? Anyone who knows us knows you are going to get the whole picture and a lot of that swirling it around your tongues. If Piedmont is Italy’s Black King, Friuli is the White King. Personally, we drink more white wine than red, but perhaps that is because Robertson Wine Tours is based in South Italy where our fish is stupidly good and the fish here is brilliant too.

Combining Croatia’s Istrian Wines with Slovenia & Friuli means you will have a superb understanding of the whole region, something that few get to experience. The province of Gorizia is located in the South East of Friuli. It is the heart of regional winemaking, spit in half by borders (now totally open). This is why we will be in Italy for breakfast, Slovenia for lunch and having wines with dinner in Trieste, our first part of the stay. If you have not had the pleasure to know what wine from Friuli is, you will soon get to understand how important these wines are and this is the centre of it all.

We have not even ushered in that holy word yet: orange wine. In New York or London, these wines are going for silly money. Thankfully, here things are more approachable, but they are the most deservedly expensive.

It is not all white, which I know is going to be relief for Bruce, but these are high acidity cooler climate wines that require ageing. We will taste Merlot and Cabernet Franc, but they will be unlike the sun kissed and extracted wines from the warmer climes of the USA. Expect Teran, Refosco & Pinot Noir from vines that have not been bathed in sun for 8 months of the year.

Food … well, it is Italy. Most people here make their own salami, hams and much more besides. We have fish, fresh water and sea, coast and mountain food, all rolled into one. No public relations or linguistic hosts, this is as real as it gets and we have mixed up the great, the simple and the unmissable on this gastronomic treat.

Testimonial

Who ever thought that die-hard, full-bodied red wine lovers would find happiness in Friuli?

Who knew of the Malvasia, Ribolla Gialla or Friuliano grapes? Who ever heard of macerating white wine? Thank goodness for us that RWT knew us, our tastes, and how to introduce us to this new tasting experience.

Our third RWT trip - this time to Friuili, Slovenia and the Istrian peninsula in Croatia - was another exceptional delight for our most important senses. We have written before of how exceptional a RWT holiday is - from the selection of the perfect hotel/B&B, to the booking of wine tastings at small, family owned and run, wineries that would not ordinarily be accessible to those planning their own trips, to the attention to detail in selecting menu items and matching wines ahead of time - this trip exceeded our expectations. In 8 short days we visited 14 wineries, had 7 lunches with wines, and enjoyed a cooking and tasting experience at Agli Amici, a Michelin star restaurant in Udine. Accompanied by Tim Robertson, we met the masters of wine-making in this area, including Dario Princic and Damijan, who are striving to perfect the art of fermenting white grapes with their skins (macerating), yielding an orangey colored wine hardly recognizable in North America. We stayed at the charming Victoria Hotel Letterario in Trieste, a perfect location from which to walk the charming town and enjoy breakfast in Italy and lunch in Slovenia and/or the Croatian Istrian peninsula, and at the Paraschos Winery in San Floriano del Collio, where the family hospitality and delicious breakfasts are matched only by the superb wine-making.
It has become our mission to try to get Tim to expose more people to his knowledge of wine, expertise in teaching others about all things wine, and his years of building relationships with wine masters and tour guides throughout South America and all regions of Italy. It is no wonder that Tim and his team have a very loyal clientele. Even if you are not inclined to make a whole trip out of discovering fabulous wine regions, you should contact RWT about putting together a day (or more) experience for you in the midst of another trip. We guarantee that you will have a unique and exceptional experience, and seek out Tim and his people for your next trip. We can’t wait to come back for another go around with RWT. Thanks for a great trip Tim!
Fondly,
Margo Newman & Bruce Brymer

LET'S TALK ABOUT TRIESTE

Kicking off in Trieste, once centre of the Hausberg Empire's grip on the current north east of Italy, this is a very easy small city and far too easy to like. Miramare Castle tops the bay. Located between the Adriatic & Slovenia, Trieste is Italy, yet not. They call it MittelEurope or Central Europe. Trieste's culture has been profoundly influenced by Eastern & German cultures, as well as Italian. Trieste's history is all about this geography and what has made it a cultural bridge between the German and Slavic peoples. The most romantic of places, Hausburg squares and Austrian coffee houses (Illy is here), rub shoulders with pizzas and Italian effortless style: this a place like no other.

Travel writers like Jan Morris left their hearts here and Joyce wrote his masterpiece, Ulysses. Trieste has not yet become massively popular as a tourist destination. All the places and people you are going to encounter are genuine. Trieste is a visual treat with Neoclassical and New Liberty buildings. Ports always have a special character, but Trieste has none of the down at heal, working dock feel.  The port of Trieste, a free port since 1719, means luxury yachts and charters are big business here. The Carso, in the hills behind Trieste, is fascinating and we will be tasting wines and seeing this magic landscape of white limestone, underground world of caves carved by rivers like the underground Timavo.

Now let's look at the tour itself.
