Wine & Food Experience in Italy (Friuli), Slovenia & Croatia

ROBERTSON WINE TOURS for ... ....

Friday, 22nd May - Saturday, 30th May 2020

FOCUS

Dear  :

Well our yearly tour is here, and its going to be great as they always are. Three countries wines in 1 tour.  I am going to throw a lot of wine at you throughout the tour and at pre dinner informal tastings that we have all enjoyed over the years. Hotels are all Reserved as are Transport and Tims Diary. I am using only two hotels and the final night close to the airport in the Marriott (the third) as I know you like no stress and a 10.40 Flight implies better to be there. Both Hotels I have reserved the Top Suites. Note I show you the price for the Trieste Hotel for 2 different Suites, As you will need in a walk Bathroom I am slightly hampered in my choices, its the Top Suite or a Suite which only has an internal view and having a view is kind of  deserved and Lovely here especially as its 5 nights. We can Discuss and the price difference is shown in the pricing at the end.

So, what do we have in store for you? Anyone who knows us knows  knows what to expect, And you do: We are going to get the whole picture and a lot of that swirling it around your tongues. If Piedmont is Italy’s Black King, Friuli is the White King but with some very interesting Colder climate reds that need ageing.

Combining Croatia’s Istrian Wines with Slovenia & Friuli means you will have a superb understanding of the whole region, something that few get to experience. The province of Gorizia is located in the South East of Friuli. It is the heart of regional winemaking, spit in half by borders (now totally open). This is why we will be in Italy for breakfast, Slovenia for lunch and having wines with dinner in Trieste, our first part of the stay. If you have not had the pleasure to know what wine from Friuli is, you will soon get to understand how important these wines are and this is the centre of it all.

We have not even ushered in that holy word yet: orange wine. In New York or London, these wines are going for silly money. Thankfully, here things are more approachable, but they are the most deservedly expensive.

It is not all white, which I know is going to be relief for Barb, but these are high acidity cooler climate wines that require ageing. We will taste Merlot and Cabernet Franc, but they will be unlike the sun kissed and extracted wines from the warmer climes of the USA. Expect Teran, Refosco & Pinot Noir from vines that have not been bathed in sun for 8 months of the year.

Food … well, it is Italy. Most people here make their own salami, hams and much more besides. We have fish, fresh water and sea, coast and mountain food, all rolled into one. No public relations or linguistic hosts, this is as real as it gets and we have mixed up the great, the simple and the unmissable on this gastronomic treat.

I know you how you both like things and how we have travelled the best in recent years, This ticks all the boxes and takes into account you do not need Breakfast and Lunch Dinner all days.

Saluti

Tim

LET'S TALK ABOUT TRIESTE

Kicking off in Trieste, once centre of the Hausberg Empire's grip on the current north east of Italy, this is a very easy small city and far too easy to like. Miramare Castle tops the bay. Located between the Adriatic & Slovenia, Trieste is Italy, yet not. They call it Mittel Europe or Central Europe. Trieste's culture has been profoundly influenced by Eastern & German cultures, as well as Italian. Trieste's history is all about this geography and what has made it a cultural bridge between the German and Slavic peoples. The most romantic of places, Hausburg squares and Austrian coffee houses (Illy is here), rub shoulders with pizzas and Italian effortless style: this a place like no other.

Travel writers like Jan Morris left their hearts here and Joyce wrote his masterpiece, Ulysses. Trieste has not yet become massively popular as a tourist destination. All the places and people you are going to encounter are genuine. Trieste is a visual treat with Neoclassical and New Liberty buildings. Ports always have a special character, but Trieste has none of the down at heal, working dock feel.  The port of Trieste, a free port since 1719, means luxury yachts and charters are big business here. The Carso, in the hills behind Trieste, is fascinating and we will be tasting wines and seeing this magic landscape of white limestone, underground world of caves carved by rivers like the underground Timavo.

Now let's look at the tour itself.

Table of contents

Trieste – Savoia Excelsior Palace

Simply put, this is the best hotel in Trieste. Built for the Emperor of the Austro Hausburg Empire, the project was overseen by the Emperor himself. With the most privileged position in front of the sea and the most regal of ballrooms, libraries and communal areas, you will find yourself soaking up all this royal history and grandeur. Liberty style meets belle époque. The hotel had a complete refit less than 5 years ago and they increased the room size. Now, the hotel has 144 rooms and suites and you can feel that no corners were cut in the refurbishment. We know and trust the management and cannot think of a better way to start your tour in Trieste. Trieste can really get under your skin quickly and many locals as well as foreigners have been caught in a romance with this magical place. Trieste is so manageable with everything spreading out from the Piazza Unità d’Italia, which is 20 meters from the foyer of this grand dame of hotels. Breakfast is a grand buffet with all one could need. You will note from the Trip Advisor comments, this is the number one hotel in the region and deservingly so.

Hotel: Adriatic Rovinj, Istria, Croatia

Rovinj’s oldest hotel and most brilliant hotel set in a grand building from 1892. with just  18 rooms and Suites this is top of the line in Northern Croatia, we love this hotel for its location, effortless cool and well trained and friendly staff, a Total winner. We appreciate the intimate feel, the contrasting black white and gold and art that hangs gloriously throughout by 14 international contemporary artists.   The location on the water front is the most privileged in Rovinj. Superb noise insolation means sleep quality is assured; While being in the centre the is no pool on site but you can use the outdoor pool and Wellness & Spa at nearby sister-hotel the Lone, as well as Mulini beach club which is all included.

There are 14 rooms and four suites, Think high ceilings with original  features whitewashed walls, floor to ceiling mirrors, parquet floors,  Grey-marble bathrooms have black-and-white mosaic-tiled floors, rain showers with glass doors, and Molton Brown toiletries. The ground-floor Cafe Adriatic and Brasserie Adriatic are just beautifully decorated in charcoal-grey, with green and blue  and velvet armchairs. This really is the perfect spot for watching the World go by at outdoor tables on the terrace overlooking the harbour.
