FOCUS

Dear Members of the Athens Wine Club:

We are extremely pleased to be able to show you our definitive presentation of the wine tour we have designed for you in Chile for May 2015. We think that one of the key to the success of the tour is it is setting a very relaxing pace. Please note that we have included transport to the dinners where it is needed.

The first official day of the tour will be Sunday 17th May 2015, although we do have some members arriving earlier and also leaving a day later. We are thrilled to be able to confirm that Fanor (our industry expert guide) will be your tour director. With Fanor, we are really above and beyond any other local wine expert guide: you can see his bio a little later in the itinerary. On Sunday 17th, when the other people will arrive in early morning, we will transfer you to the hotel and let you get acclimatized. We have a request in for everybody to have an early check in. This is not guaranteed or we have to pay a large cost, but we hope we can get you all to your rooms just as soon as we can. There are facilities to use if you need to freshen up and the hotel understands the pressure to get people their rooms as soon as possible. We plan to take you out for lunch at the central food market of Santiago de Chile, where you are going to be able to eat in this vibrant atmosphere and we know it is a great entre to start the city tour. After lunch, you will have a guided tour of Santiago de Chile, a look at the most important attractions and historical places ... and of course an in depth look at its founding and more recent history. We did not want to make the welcome dinner on the first night as some of you may be fading, but the hotel's restaurant (Enebro) will be expecting you and it is no means a second choice restaurant. We will be making a wonderful welcome tasting of five specially selected wines to give you a good overview of the different regions and local varietals.

On DAY 02 (our first real day in wine), we will hit the western coastal region of Casablanca (cool climate whites and reds) & Valparaiso. We will visit three wineries and eat a gourmet lunch at one of them (Kingston Family). Loma Larga is a favourite of ours and the top wines of Viñedos Organicos Emiliana (Coyam & Gê) are extraordinary. We will finish the day taking a look and city tour of Valparaiso, the UNESCO port city and seat of Chilean Government. Today we may arrive back a little later, really depending on the traffic to get back into Santiago. A quick freshen up and we will whisk you just 20 minutes away to enjoy the welcome dinner with two winemakers from the Movement of Independent Vintners (MOVI). This is a very important association of small and independent winemakers from Chile founded in 2009. As Chile's barriers to entry are high being an export driven market, this is a very fascinating evening, where you will get to hear another side of the wine industry while eating at the private house of one of our favourite local chefs: Jennifer Rix. We know you will love this event.

On Day 03, we are heading north of Santiago de Chile (the only time we do so) to go to two of the most interesting wineries in Aconcagua Valley: one extremely important and historical winery (Errazuriz) and one new massively successful upstart started by a Swiss lawyer (Von Siebenthal), who has since gone full time wine! Exceedingly good wines and lunch is just a wonderful affair, we guarantee. Just remember not to buy any wine to take home in Chile as local taxes mean you will find them cheaper at home. Tonight's reserved dinner at the Peumayen Restaurant will test your taste buds to the max at this extremely well regarded and avant-garde eatery.

DAY 04 sees us going to the heart of Chilean wine making with the Maipo Valley. We are going to see three diverse wineries, each with a unique feature: bio dynamic in the original garage winery of Antiyal, incredible architecture in the winery of Perez Cruz and one of the most important and sustainable wineries in Chile, De Martino. Tonight we will accompany you to our favourite seafood restaurant in Santiago de Chile (Puerto Fuy). This restaurant has been our go to high-end fish restaurant in Santiago for ten years and it deserves to be looked forward to.

On DAY 05, we move on from Santiago de Chile and head south three hours to the Colchagua Valley. Prior to arriving and for breaking the journey, we are going to visit three wineries: Anakena, Altair & Casa Silva. We will have lunch in Altair with one of the most outstanding views possible. Altair is the joint venture between Viña San Pedro (local wine group) & Chateau Dassault (St. Emilion / France). One more stop prior to your new lodge (Terra Viña): we are going to enjoy just a tasting at Casa Silva and we will look just at three red wines, with a proclivity to Carmenere that they do so well here.

Expect us to arrive at Terra Viña just after 06:00 PM. Terra Viña is located in the middle of the vines and close to the restaurants and the wineries we are interested in. We have reserved you a dinner in the best little Peruvian restaurant outside of Santiago, totally informal and relaxed with the food being the focus. We want you all nice and rested ready for the day of the big hitters.

On DAY 06, we will visit three of the biggest and grandest names in Chilean wine making: Montes & Lapostolle in the Colchagua Valley and then we will drive to the delightful town of Lolol to see what the world famous François Lurton gets up to in Chile. Tonight's reserved dinner is at Etiqueta Negra just 15 minutes away. Please NOTE that we have kept many dinners not included, as we do not want to over burden you with food. In this way, you can choose something lighter at night, if you wish.

On DAY 07, did we leave the best to last? Two vertical tastings leads me to believe YES and both the owners of the wineries would agree. You will taste the Carmenere from 125 years old vines at Neyen and make a vertical of three vintages. No visit down in these southern wine valleys is more impressive than the one at VIK. With grand ambitions to make the finest red wine in the world, what we have seen and tasted thus far tell us this may well happen with the massive investment by the billionaire owner Alexander VIK. The dinner tonight is the farewell dinner at Bello Vino, one of best Italian restaurants in Chile: wonderful Italian food and wines in ample supply.

On DAY 08 (our last day), we will check out from Terra Viña and we are going to keep things a little lighter and take a fun lesson in how to blend your own wine and taste the great selection from MontGras. We will then have lunch half way back to Santiago at the Entre Rios restaurant in the Cachapoal Valley. After lunch, we will drive you back to the airport for your late afternoon / early evening flights back home.

All in all this tour will give you a great insight into what Chile is capable of wine wise. There will be a very good mix of varietals, climates and terroirs for you to get a much better picture of Chile, the people, the land ... and of course the wines and the food. We very much look forward to welcoming you to Chile and want to thank you in advance for trusting us with your valuable vacation time. You will have the most amazing immersion into great wine and food in Chile just one week away now.‏

Testimonial – Chile – Wine & Food Experience – 8 Nights

Dear Tim,
Superb. That is the word that best sums up our overall impression of the itinerary you prepared for our trip to Chile. We discussed this at our monthly meeting last Friday evening. The variety of wineries (old to young, small to large) allowed us to have a very wide exposure to Chilean wines. Fanor’s knowledge and very pleasant personality added greatly to our enjoyment of our visit there.
All in all, the first word above is our overall assessment. Our many thanks to you, Cristian, Fanor, and Andres for arranging this wonderful trip and Chilean adventure.

Santiago de Chile – Plaza El Bosque Ebro

Plaza El Bosque Ebro is located in Las Condes, probably the most upscale neighbourhood in Santiago de Chile and very close to many restaurants and services. We think this is the best priced five stars hotel in Santiago. This exclusive lodge provides high-end accommodations with contemporary flair, many amenities, a convenient location and a much-praised rooftop restaurant with sweeping panoramic views. Best of all, thanks to the local ownership, Ebro has a more Chilean flavour than the other chain-hotel counterparts. The spacious rooms are warm and comfortable, with a living area with a sliding door and their executive suites have a fully stocked kitchenette that provides an urban pied-a-terre for both business and leisure travellers.

Santiago Wine Valleys – Colchagua Valley – Terra Viña

With the Andes Mountains as lovely background, Terra Viña brings on a new concept in Chile: lodging in a very beautiful environment next to an old family-based winery and dining in the elegant surroundings. Surrounded by their own vineyard, Terra Viña is a footstep away from the Laura Hartwig Winery and the Vino Bello Restaurant. The owners are a Danish/Chilean couple that have decided to settle in Chile after having lived in Denmark for many years. They have 19 tastefully decorated rooms. Each room has its own balcony with a splendid view. All the rooms have been equipped and decorated for your comfort: oak floors, traditional country style bathroom tiles and black out curtains. They bought the best beds and imported duvets and pillows from the Scandinavia. You will count on complete peace and tranquillity at night.

Tour Outline & Guiding – Chile – 8 Nights

GUIDING

Fanor

Fanor has spent almost 30 years in his life in close relationship to the wine industry. At the beginning, he worked as export manager for the biggest winery of Chile (Concha y Toro) and later on as independent broker. He has travelled worldwide, having the opportunity to learn about different cultures and history. He is an easy-going person, with a very elevated cultural level. He enjoys meeting people to develop long conversations about wine, history, food, geography, popular music and literature. Between 2009 and 2012, he was appointed as managing director of “Colchagua Wine Route”, the first and most important wine route in Chile. This position gave him the opportunity to understand the tourism industry. Between 2005 and 2012, Fanor has been member of the board of directors of the Casablanca Wine Producers Association and the Colchagua Wine Producers Association. Due to this activity, he has developed a very strong link with the wineries located in both valleys. Today, Fanor is on retirement, but he enjoys sharing his knowledge about wine with tourists interested in learning about this industry in Chile, working as a wine tourism guide.
