FOCUS

We have designed the tour with everything we discussed and throughout our extensive communication. This could not be a better tour from an enological point of view. You will be also seeing beautiful countryside and be accompanied by an expert wine guide. Hotels have been shown for their location, cost and we know all these hotels well. There is just one 5-star hotel here and we have chosen as it offers the best quality for a superb price apart from that we have centered on family run small lodges.

We have left the possibility of five runs for you throughout the tour and we will be providing you with some maps and orientation in all cases so you can literally get up, run and be beholden to no one.

You will spend the first two nights in Santiago. On Day 01, we will orientate you and give you an overview on the history of Santiago & Chile as well as seeing the main historic sites. We are making restaurants suggestions and we are happy to make reservations for you (recommended) throughout the tour. Naturally, they can be cancelled by the guides if you change your mind after the day's wine touring. We have arranged a guided wine tasting at a superb wine shop close by that will focus on the regions you are not visiting.

On Day 02, the first day in wine is the Aconcagua Valley, one hour and 15 minutes into the pre-Andes where three world-class wineries sit, with predisposition to bold reds. You will have a superb lunch at Chadwick's Errazuriz Winery, one of the major estates that brought fine wine to the world's attention. On Day 03, we head with your bags to Casablanca & Valparaiso, seat of the Government. Valparaiso is a world heritage site of UNESCO and a unique port city that you will explore with your guide. After lunch, you will enjoy a guided visit and tasting of Loma Larga to then arrive onto Casa Marin, where you will stay for two nights.

On Day 04, you will wake up in the middle of the vineyards and it is a perfect time to take a run before we start the day's touring after breakfast at 10 AM. Day 04 & 05 will give you the complete overview of the Casablanca, Leyda & San Antonio Valleys. You will have had a deep immersion into Chile's cooler climate reds and famous whites. On Day 05, we move slowly down to the central valley of Colchagua, where you will enjoy one night at Terra Viña, again nestled in the middle of the vineyards.

Day 06 & 07 will give you a total understanding of these really important valley and we are fortunate enough to get you to the Maule Valley where few get to. Day 08 is a travel day, not stressful but we are unable to make more than the transfer to Santiago Airport. After the check in at Mendoza, we will orientate you with your expert wine guide for the next days with a tasting again with wines from the region of San Juan that you do not have time to visit.

Day 09 will be your first full day on Argentina's side of the Andes and we are particularly focusing on smaller scale premium producers after Chile's larger scale. Mendel has for many years been one of our favourite winners for wine and hospitality with the Semillion & Malbec naturally. Our dinner suggestion for tonight is 1884, Mendoza's most prestigious restaurant.

On Day 10 (Sunday), we are going to give you a little more time in the morning so you can enjoy a run in Mendoza's gigantic and beautiful park, just a few blocks from the Diplomatic. Once you have freshened up and breakfasted, you will visit three unique wineries: Benegas (a Michele Rolland consulted winery with superb extraction and bold reds), Mater Vin (a new winery formed by Santiago Achaval … previous owner of Achaval Ferrer) & Achaval Ferrer. Tonight is your last night in Central Mendoza and we suggest you to enjoy the lovely surroundings and have dinner at walking distance at either Azafran or Maria Antonieta Restaurant.

On Day 11, we check out from Diplomatic and move to the delightful village of Chacras de Coria in the foothills of the Andes. Two nights in this semi urban area of the Greater Mendoza will mean a new environment and less travel each day, as we start to explore the sub region of Agrelo in this lovely retreat that is Lares de Chacras, a small lodge we have been using since the day it opened with nothing but extremely happy clients. On Day 11 & 12, we will focus on Vistalba & Agrelo, which in many respects we could say are the heart of Cabernet Sauvignon and extremely high-end production of Malbec. Visits to Walter Bressia & Cobos are sure to be highlights, with each of the wineries offering something unique and very interesting to say enologically speaking and from an architectural point of view.

On Day 13, we finally allow you a brief but well deserved break from wine wine wine and we whisk you up into the Andes for some serious hiking and outstanding views over Mendoza. After the day in the Andes, we move to our last lodge and in many respects one of the best on the tour. La Azul is a garage winery that over the last ten years has developed a wonderful hospitality and reputation for their wines. Last year, they opened their lodge and family home to guests and it is working just wonderfully, with unending views over the desert and plains of Tupungato and into the Andes. Our last two days being at La Azul means that we are perfectly placed to visit some of the most interesting of the Uco Valley. Apart from enjoying superb visits, there is an unmissable lunch at Siete Fuegos and visits to five of the most enologically important wineries of the Uco Valley. On Day 15, we take you back to Mendoza via the last wineries and have you back in Santiago de Chile to pick up your evening flight back to the US and home.

As we have said from the start, we thrive on building intensive tours on both sides of the Andes and we have left no stone unturned to give you the very best experience. You will go back home understanding the whole territory and even the ones we have not had time to visit with an expert wine guiding by industry professionals. All said, this is a once in a lifetime experience in the wine regions of Chile & Argentina.

Chile Wine Valleys – San Antonio Valley – Casa Marin Guest House

Casa Marin is one of our favourite wineries in Chile. The wines are just incredible and you will be received like one of the family. Breakfast, fruit, teas and coffees are included. Rustic yet charming, the views are spectacular and the guesthouse is simple but lovely and it has a small kitchen area. You are right in the vineyards with stunning views. Dinner is optional and will be cooked especially for you. The wine tasting with Maria Luz Marin is wonderful. She is a formidable force in Chile’s wine industry and all together amazing human being. Rustic yet charming, the views are just spectacular and the guesthouse is simple but lovely.

Valparaiso – Casadoca Boutique

Casadoca Boutique is the place to rest from your travels in luxury. Enjoy a walk around their beautiful gardens, the fresh sea air and the silence. The nearest beach is only one minute away and the town of Concon is less than a 15-minute walk. You can also enjoy their SPA facilities such as the hot tub, the sauna or a relaxing massage. From the living area, some of the suites and the dining area you can look out over the sea. Their breakfast, lunch and dinners are prepared with only the best products, fresh and exclusive and taste delicious. It is a rather small boutique hotel, but it is obvious that all staff has been carefully trained: everyone in every capacity is gracious and efficient. The suites are just wonderful, luxurious design and very comfortable. Casadoca Boutique is definitely a good choice.

Chile Wine Valleys – Colchagua Valley – Colchagua Camp

This is just an extraordinary accommodation. Even if you are not the camping type of person, this will definitely be something you will never regret. The tents are romantic, luxurious and cosy, inside there is a warm comfortable bed and it offers you a breath-taking view over the Andes. Come out of your tent and the staff will have fired up your private hot tub and there is a glass of wine waiting for you. The fresh air and the wonderful surroundings will give to you new energy for your travels. The local wineries are only 10 minutes away and Santa Cruz is only a 20-minute drive. All in all, we think this is a different and unforgettable experience.

Chile Wine Valleys – Colchagua Valley – Cava Colchagua Boutique

This is something else. If you really want your trip to be devoted to wine, you need to sleep in Cava Colchagua. They offer wine barrels that are transformed into comfortable and luxurious bedrooms. There is a large bed inside and private bathrooms built in the cabin. The service is just great and will do anything to make your stay perfect. Besides that, the surroundings are gorgeous and the location works well. It is just in the centre of Colchagua Valley.

Mendoza City – Diplomatic

Diplomatic is located in a privileged position just few blocks from the main commercial and tourist areas. Its strategic location offers guests the best view of both the Andes and the city itself. Built as the Luxury Hotel to beat in Mendoza, it was designed in exquisite detail involving elegance and class, large spaces and rooms and suites with lovely parquet flooring not carpet.  You can also enjoy a super pool and decked area with views over the Andes. Full Spa services, a breakfast that hits all the buttons. We really like this hotel especially as the fact it is not an international chain and is owned and run by a Mendoza family.

Mendoza Vineyards – Lares de Chacras

This is a semi urban setting close to the little Spanish Plaza of Chacras. The construction is rural, combining Andean stone with typical desert wood. The lodge is simplicity and modern comfort combined. A total of 10 rooms is a lovely size and we like the location and we also like the way it is run. The feedback of our clients has been that this is far above their expectations. It is a great lodge, but it is not for 5-Star only travelers. Of course, like more places they have a great reputation and only 10 rooms, it gets full very quickly. We think prices since 2015 have become a little high.

Uco Valley – Finca La Azul Guest House

Shirley & Pablo’s house: this could be the alternative name of Finca La Azul. They are who bring this all to life and make it the most intimate stay on this side of the Andes. A beautiful design lead home that they cleverly built to include some extra rooms for their guests: we hope you will be among them. Endless 360 degree vineyards views with the Andes ever present. The rooms are extremely large and light filled, all enjoying their own terraces. The style is typical of Argentine Pampa with exposed walls, wall to ceiling glass giving a rustic yet clean effect. There is also a huge garden to enjoy with a swimming pool and a parrilla, where the BBQ meats work their magic. Paul & Shirley are avid about food/wine and super cooks. This stay will be intimate and relaxing. Highly Recommended. Availability is an issue.

Tour Outline & Guiding – Argentina & Chile 9 Nights – Mr Kenton Larson & Family

GUIDING

Mariana (Buenos Aires / Argentina)

She is fluent in English & Spanish with many years of experience in tourism. Mariana is just the perfect guide as she can read people very well and knows pretty well how to get into the skin of Buenos Aires. You will have with her a very intense and fascinating understanding of Buenos Aires with Mariana. Also do not forget that Mariana is a great tango dancer.

Damian (Uruguay)

Damian is a wine connoisseur who was born and raised in Mendoza. He was always in contact with the wine culture in his daily life thanks to this grandfather, a wine enthusiast who had been a manager of a large tree plantation in Uco Valley, the very heart of the wine industry in Mendoza. In 2004 he spend three months in New York, where he acquired the fluency and proficiency needed to communicate in English as a native speaker. After getting a BA in Mendoza, he left the city in the search of new horizons and arrived in Uruguay. He started to investigate the new territory, visiting different wineries across the country and talking to wine makers as well as studying the wine culture of the country. He finally came to the conclusion that Uruguay, a country who was not yet discovered by wine lovers, was a diamond in the rough and had to be known in the world. You will have the chance with Damian to discover and enjoy Uruguay in a very friendly way by introducing you to the relaxed and informal local style, which allows people to meet the winery owners in person and ask them all the questions they may have about grape growing and wine-making process. A unique experience.

Macarena (Mendoza / Argentina)

Macarena is a certified translator in English/Spanish and has experience in the world of wine. Her passion for wine began years ago, when she worked as a tour guide at Vistalba Winery, where she carried out bilingual wine tastings and worked as an interpreter in commercial meetings. She was also in charge of La Posada Wine Lodge and of wine sales at the winery. Moreover, she lived three years in the United States and spent a year in Buenos Aires. Today, she works as a wine tour guide and as a freelance translator. She really enjoys her job as she can include in her life her three passions: wine, nature and language. She believes the wine, the traditional food and the Andes Mountain Range of Mendoza are a perfect combination, which she enjoys sharing with anyone who visits the province. Her goal as a wine tour guide is not only to transmit the enthusiasm and excitement people from Mendoza live in the cradle of Malbec, but also to make visitors live an experience they will never forget.

Gonzalo (Chile)

Gonzalo has an international business degree and has been related to the wine industry for more than seven years now. He has also taken some wine courses (WSET 1 & 2, Sommelier School Level 2). After becoming a sommelier, he got a contract working on-board of the Seabourn Sojourn as a sommelier where he had the chance to learn more about international grape varietals and sharing experiences with wine lovers. Ten years ago, he went to travel as a backpacker to Australia & New Zealand, where he always tried to find jobs related to the wine industry (cellar hand, seasonal vineyard worker). He also took an exchange program in the States for two winter seasons to learn and improve his language skills in English. In Chile, he worked as a tour guide for three years at Clos Apalta/Lapostolle Winery and now he works as freelance tour guide among other personal projects. Currently, he studies winemaking at the University of Talca in Santa Cruz besides French as a hobby. Wine is his passion and he loves sharing this with people from all over the world. Now the Chilean wines are not boring anymore, there is so many interesting musts to taste and to experience that he feels part of it and ready to share it with you.
