Cultural, Wine & Food Experience in Southern Italy: Campania, Basilicata & Sicily ROBERTSON WINE TOURS for David & Lauren Friday, 06th October 2017 - Wednesday, 25th October 2017

FOCUS

Dear Lauren & David,

We are thrilled to be able to present the final version of the tour that we have designed for you and of course have added in the services that Madison is going to enjoy with you.

As you know the tour offers you plenty of time for yourselves to explore and relax. We have listened carefully to your concerns that you like to take it easy while on vacation and have structured it accordingly. Amalfi is your first stop and we will take you to enjoy the mythical site of Pompeii and all the glorious coastal routes that make this region so famous. We move to Matera through the wineries of Campania and will take you into Puglia for the day, while you are here in our Italian base and voted capital of culture of Europe for 2019. Once you have relaxed into the ways of the south, we send you to the most interesting and largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily. In Sicily, you will see Taormina (including a day out in wine on Etna) & Palermo (including a day out to Erice & Camporeale, a place of surprising wines). You will finally have your last nights in Rome to explore and taste Italy's capital while staying in Trastevere, the hip and happening quarter of Rome.

Hotel: Grand Hotel de la Minerve, Rome

This incredible 16th-century palace in the very heart of the old part of Rome is one of the Grand Dames. Apart from the Absolutely perfect location, the atrium bar, the roof top garden and the terrace are all great spaces to relax, read a book or enjoy a glass of wine. You will see the Pantheon’s roof from your room if we choose the rooms we like. Rooms are stylish but not form over function, this is also not a chain and we love female GM who cares and is ever present.

This is the best place to go out and stroll around Old Rome, if you are short on time and want to be close to it all, you cannot get better.

Hotel: Residence Amalfi. Amalfi Coast. Campania

The Residence Amalfi is a classic small and family run hotel situated right in front of the sea and slap bang in the centre of Amalfi. Built in the 18th century for a noble family, the hotel has many beautiful touches and original features, with plenty of charming spaces to enjoy an aperitif or read your book. Whilst being right in the centre of the town (which can be very busy), there is a quiet stress-free feeling inside the structure. With under 30 rooms, this feels more like stepping back in time to unhurried travel, friendly and discreet service with a family caring in the background. All rooms are different and come with the characteristic colourful tiles in bathrooms and on the floors. We have never had anything, but praise from our clients who have stayed here.

Hotel in Pietra, Matera

How often do you get to stay in a deconsecrated church built into the rock and latterly expanding to become an important local scholastic monastery? Roberto (the owner) has branched off on his own to bring something really quite unique. The mainstay of the property is the massively high central part of the church that has been turned into a wonderful sitting room, reception and place to enjoy the breakfast. Rooms are all very different, some gigantic suites, some smaller rooms that have their own terrace with one of the most commanding views over the Sassi. Breakfast is served buffet style with all the local sweet and savoury delights world travellers come to expect. There are no other food services in the day, but you have a great choice of lunching and dining options at walking distance. This is a place to contemplate and understand why Matera has been voted the European Capital of Culture for 2019.

Hotel: Maison Blanche, Taormina

Having had the pleasure in staying in the best lodges in the world, it is easy to get jaded. Maison Blanche is right off the charts for even the most travelled amongst us. It is simply an incredible stay. Why? Is it the positon perched precariously on a cliff in the beautiful village of Taormina or the James Bond like structure with all rooms experiencing once in a lifetime views or the owner, Francesco, who opens his home and delights in ensuring everything is just perfect for your stay? Naturally, it is a combination of everything. The house is an architects dream, the interior is a feast of heirlooms from a distinguished industrialist family. With only four rooms, advance booking is essential. The property is not located in the centre of Taormina (15-minute walk). The path up or down is a real delight, but naturally stairs and inclines do predominate due to the elevation of Taormina. Breakfast like everywhere else here is served with a stunning view over Isola Bella and they will make whatever you want. We cannot recommend this extraordinary structure more highly.

Plaza Opera, Palermo

Plaza Opera is a tiny gem that could not be better located for being in Palermo: a few steps away from Via Libertà, a very central hub of Palermo for shopping and great restaurants. The name of the hotel is taken from the Massimo Vittorio Emanuele Theatre, just around the corner. The hotel was opened in 2005, so it is modern in style with various local artists contributing to the décor: expect muted colours with flashes of red. They have successfully blended modern design with the Sicilian Style. Being a small hotel, the service is very relaxed with friendly and informal staff. The rooms range from utilitarian all the way to the two beautiful penthouses suites with incredible views over the city. Breakfast is all you would expect with local products with an emphasis on organic produce. There is a terrace on the roof, which is a perfect place to enjoy sunset prior to going out for dinner. This hotel is perfect for clients who want to see and feel Palermo up close with everything at hand.

Hotel: Donna Camilla Savelli, Rome

Housed in a beautifully restored 17th-century monastery designed by Borromini (a major figure in Roman Baroque architecture), the Donna Camilla Savelli is located just over a bridge from the heart of old Rome and immersed in the bohemian district of Trastevere. The 76 rooms and suites are sober in decoration very much in harmony with the monastic concept of the historic building. The magnificent view of Rome from the panoramic roof terrace is too much of a treat to miss. Not a luxury stay, but one of the cleverest choices around. You will not feel like a tourist here. We do recommend the premiere suite with terrace, if you can justify it.
