FOCUS

After fourteen years of visiting Chile, we really now say that we understand why this country is literally a heaven for winemakers, boasting such a diverse range of terroirs due to the incredible length of the country (4,300 kms). We have designed this outstanding tour to show you the beautiful reality that is Chile, and why it enjoys the most stable and highest standard of living in South America. What better way to know a country than through its  wines, foods, enjoying real Chilean hospitality.

This eight-day immersion ticks all the possible boxes when it comes to a beautifully paced tour, showing you some of the best in wineries, restaurants, accommodations with delightful and highly trained wine loving guides.

This will be a fixed date departure appealing to wine and food lovers who also like to meet like-minded travellers. We tend to keep these groups very select with an optimum number of passengers being 4 to 10 people. We know these types of tours really work and enjoy the benefit of lower costs than traveling solo.

We have chosen three bases for this adventure. We start with two nights in Santiago de Chile at Le Reve Boutique, a small and perfectly formed hotel. We then move to the Pacific Coast across to Valparaiso or Valpo, as it is locally known, for three nights. Valpo is a unique and blessed colourful town strewn over the suggestive hills and views. Palacio Astoreca is a gorgeous colonial house converted into a design lead lodge with SPA facilities located in the heart of Bellavista. We finish the tour in the Colchagua Valley for two nights at Cava Colchagua Boutique, a truly unique opportunity to sleep in outsized wine barrels transformed into comfortable and luxurious bedrooms, all set in gorgeous grounds and close to all our wineries of interest.

We have concentrated on some small and niche wineries, as well as the massively important. You will visit Maipo Valley, the origins of the mythical world beating cabs. In San Antonio & Rosario, you will sample the best of cooler climate white/reds and enjoy an expedition on horses into the vineyards of a biodynamic valley. We also have a cooking experience, while enjoying Viña del Mar & Valpo. We are going to take to some small impeccable off the radar wineries and explore Pablo Neruda’s house, now a delightful museum. A few more world-class wineries and we whisk you to the airport.

No company does wine and food experiences like us. Chile is no exception. Come and enjoy this fascinating people and dynamic country.

Wine

Chile, being a winemakers’ paradise, has attracted young winemaking talents from all over the world, none more so than the sons and daughters of wineries’ owners from France. A new reality of natural and terroir driven wines have also exploded. It is no longer necessary to visit just Napa-eqsue experiences in cathedrals to wine, which, however technically correct, is just more of the same over-extracted and barrelled new world wine. In Chile, the great varieties from France predominate: Cabernet Sauvignon followed by Merlot, Carmenere, Malbec, Pinot Noir and Syrah. There are unquestionably unique wines coming from all parts of Chile that are not just new world copies. Did you know Chile thankfully never succumbed to phylloxera and there was no forced uprooting of 100 years of vines (European Market in the 80’s)? This makes for some outstanding old vineyard treasures, particularity the ones with Carmenere. Click here for more information on the wines of Chile.

Valparaiso – Palacio Astoreca

Think of big rooms, wooden floors, rain head showers, tall ceilings and beautiful views over the bay below. Palacio Astoreca is set in a colonial house overlooking the bay of Valparaiso. Suites include seating areas and in-room tubs, terraces and balconies. A SPA, a pool, a hot tub and a hamam complete the line-up. We think it is worth the extra to have rooms with a view, as it is something to marvel. Palacio Astoreca is a revamped old-fashioned free small charming hotel in the middle of the unique and delightfully bohemian city of Valpo, as it is affectionately known.

Chile Wine Valleys – Colchagua Valley – Cava Colchagua Boutique

This is something else. If you really want your trip to be devoted to wine, you need to sleep in Cava Colchagua. They offer wine barrels that are transformed into comfortable and luxurious bedrooms. There is a large bed inside and private bathrooms built in the cabin. The service is just great and will do anything to make your stay perfect. Besides that, the surroundings are gorgeous and the location works well. It is just in the centre of Colchagua Valley.

GUIDING

Chile: GONZALO

Gonzalo has an international business degree and has been related to the wine industry for more than seven years now. He has also taken some wine courses (WSET 1 & 2, Sommelier School Level 2). After becoming a sommelier, he got a contract working on-board of the Seabourn Sojourn as a sommelier where he had the chance to learn more about international grape varietals and sharing experiences with wine lovers. Ten years ago, he went to travel as a backpacker to Australia & New Zealand, where he always tried to find jobs related to the wine industry (cellar hand, seasonal vineyard worker). He also took an exchange program in the States for two winter seasons to learn and improve his language skills in English. In Chile, he worked as a tour guide for three years at Clos Apalta/Lapostolle Winery and now he works as freelance tour guide among other personal projects. Currently, he studies winemaking at the University of Talca in Santa Cruz besides French as a hobby. Wine is his passion and he loves sharing this with people from all over the world. Now the Chilean wines are not boring anymore, there is so many interesting musts to taste and to experience that he feels part of it and ready to share it with you.
